Drug arrest revives old troubles for Tatum O’Neal

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Tatum O’Neal swore she was done with drugs. The Oscar-winning former child actress proclaimed she was sober as she promoted her 2004 tell-all memoir, cobbled her acting career back together and even offered advice to misbehaving pop star Britney Spears.

O’Neal’s arrest Sunday on charges of buying cocaine in her gritty-chic downtown Manhattan neighborhood suggests her struggle with addiction may not be over.

O’Neal, 44, looked tired and said nothing as she was arraigned Monday in Manhattan Criminal Court on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. The daughter of screen star Ryan O’Neal entered no plea and was released without bail until a July 28 court date.

Prosecutors are recommending drug treatment for the actress, who detailed her dependency on heroin and cocaine in her best-selling memoir, “A Paper Life.”

Her lawyer, Robert Marinelli, declined to comment Monday. Her manager and publicist did not immediately return telephone calls after her court appearance, while her agent’s office referred calls to her publicist.

The arrest was another low point in a life that has included many. Her childhood, she has said, was a Hollywood horror show. Then came years of drug abuse, public feuding with her father and a searing child custody fight with her ex-husband, tennis star John McEnroe. Her acting career vaporized.

But a determined O’Neal rebuilt it in recent years, telling The New York Times last year that she called and e-mailed her agent daily and accepted every role offered. She appeared in independent films, played guest roles on such shows as “Law and Order: Criminal Intent” and “8 Simple Rules … for Dating My Teenage Daughter” and took a spin on “Dancing with the Stars.”

Her efforts solidified into a recurring role as hard-drinking Maggie Gavin in the FX cable channel’s television drama “Rescue Me.” The show is now in production for its fifth and sixth seasons.

Show producer Sony Pictures Television said the actress has shot one episode for the upcoming season and is scheduled to appear in several more, but Sony Pictures declined to comment further.

Police found two bags of cocaine in O’Neal’s right front pants pocket when she was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Sunday on the rundown-turned-trendy Lower East Side, according to a court complaint. Officers saw O’Neal accept the drug from a man during a routine drug sweep, police said. Initial reports suggested she had bought crack, but police later said it was powder cocaine.

At age 10, O’Neal won an Academy Award for best supporting actress for 1973’s “Paper Moon,” becoming the youngest person ever to win an Oscar. Three years later, her $350,000 paycheck for “The Bad News Bears” made her Hollywood’s highest-paid child star.

But behind the scenes, O’Neal’s life was a drama of neglect, dysfunction and debauchery, according to her memoir.

She described her mother, the late actress Joanna Moore, as a pill-popping mess and claimed her “Love Story” star father slugged her out of jealousy when she won her Oscar; he denounced the book as “malicious lies” and “clouded memories.”

In May 2007, prosecutors declined to charge Ryan O’Neal for firing what the actor called a warning shot during a brawl with his son. O’Neal contended he fired the shot in self-defense after his son, Griffin, attacked him with a fireplace poker during an argument at the actor’s Malibu home.

In 1983, police were called to their home after a fight in which Ryan O’Neal knocked out two of his son’s teeth, the Los Angeles Times reported. No charges were filed.

Griffin O’Neal was convicted of reckless boating in a 1986 accident that killed the son of film director Francis Ford Coppola.

Meanwhile, an adolescent Tatum was drawn into an opium-heightened orgy at age 12, according to her book.

Her 1986 marriage to McEnroe was little healthier, according to both. He wrote in his 2002 autobiography, “You Cannot Be Serious,” that the two were high during their first night together. She wrote that the famously temperamental tennis great physically abused her, which he denied, saying he was “very disappointed in Tatum’s interpretation of my life and the lives of our children.”

The two split in the early 1990s. As her drug problems deepened, O’Neal lost custody of their three children.

She saw echoes of her story in Spears’ misfortunes last year, when the singer was ordered temporarily to surrender custody of her two young children after she engaged in a spate of odd antics. O’Neal told “Entertainment Tonight” that Spears needed to seek addiction treatment, as she had.

Her own addictions, she has repeatedly said, are behind her.

“For years I could hardly look people in the eye,” she wrote in her memoir. “Now that I’ve burned away the painful debris of my life, I feel courageous and open.”

‘Entertainment Tonight’ mum on Jolie twins snafu

Source: www.celebritymound.com

In the world of celebrity news, prematurely declaring the birth of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s twins is like calling an election before enough votes are counted. That was the problem facing the TV show “Entertainment Tonight,” which on Monday would not discuss its report that Jolie had given birth, even though Pitt’s manager and other news organizations had declared it untrue.

“This is an absolutely huge, huge story for us,” said Sarah Ivens, editor in chief of OK! magazine. “Essentially you have two of the most beautiful, famous people in the world. We’ve all seen they’ve had one baby, Shiloh, and it is the coolest, most adorable baby on the planet. And this time they’re having two? It can’t get any better.”

It was “pandemonium” at the offices of Us Weekly when the “Entertainment Tonight” report was posted Friday morning, said Dina Sansing, the magazine’s entertainment director.

People magazine was first to report that the story was not true. Us Weekly checked its own sources and concluded the same, Sansing said.

During its broadcast on Friday night, “Entertainment Tonight” said that “a source who says she was inside the delivery room tells us yes, the babies were born and yes, mother and babies are doing fine.” The newsmagazine also quoted another Web site in giving the babies’ alleged names.

Later, however, the story was removed from the “Entertainment Tonight” Web site. A representative from the show, who refused to speak on the record, said Monday that the story had not been retracted. The representative would not comment on whether the show had checked back with the original source after Pitt’s manager denied the births.

The show’s veteran executive producer, Linda Bell Blue, did not return a call seeking comment on Monday.

“Entertainment Tonight” didn’t mention the story on Monday’s broadcast. It did, however, pick up quotes from a magazine interview with Angelina Jolie about being married.

The report of the babies’ birth was magnified when The Associated Press reported that “Entertainment Tonight” had said the twins had arrived. Although The AP could not immediately confirm or debunk the report, its editors talked with an “Entertainment Tonight” spokeswoman about the source and “we felt confident that they had the story nailed down,” said Lou Ferrara, AP managing editor who supervises entertainment coverage.

The AP also felt that “Entertainment Tonight” had a solid reputation in the world of celebrity news, he said.

The story shifted as the day went on Friday, with other celebrity publications posting anonymous denials, and then AP quoting Pitt’s manager, Cynthia Pett-Dante, saying it was not true.

The incident has damaged the AP’s relationship with “Entertainment Tonight,” Ferrara said.

“If you have the story, stand up and shout it from the mountaintops,” he said. “If you’ve got it wrong, you’ve got to shout it from the mountaintops that you’ve got it wrong.”

A competing newsmagazine, “Access Hollywood,” specifically told viewers that its rival had blown it.

“As news and information move at a lightning pace, it’s all the more reason to be right first than first wrong,” said Rob Silverstein, “Access Hollywood” executive producer.

Jolie has said the babies are due in August. Ivens said OK! grew more comfortable over the weekend that the “Entertainment Tonight” story was wrong because of other clues. There were no reports of flowers being delivered to hospitals, or grandparents flying in, she said, and Pitt was seen attending a sporting event over the weekend – an unlikely spot for a new father of premature twins.

Rock pioneer Bo Diddley dies at age 79

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Bo Diddley, the Mississippi-born musician credited with helping the blues evolve into rock ‘n’ roll, died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., Monday after a lengthy illness. He was 79.

Born Elias McDaniel, he became Bo Diddley after his family had moved to Chicago, when he was 6. “I don’t know where the kids got it, but the kids in grammar school gave me that name,” he said in 1999, though he actually told many versions of how he got the name, the Associated Press reports. Some profilers cite a one-string instrument used in traditional blues music called a diddley bow as the origin.

What is certain was Diddley’s signature look: homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat. His pioneering song hits – 1955’s single “Bo Diddley” introduced listeners to his signature rhythm of bomp ba-bomp bomp, bomp bomp – also helped define him, among them: “Say Man,” “You Can’t Judge a Book by Its Cover,” “Shave and a Haircut,” “Uncle John,” “Who Do You Love?” and “The Mule.”

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the recipient of a 1999 lifetime achievement award at the Grammy Awards, Diddley, who also played the inaugurations of Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, thought it was great to receive honors, “but it didn’t put no figures in my checkbook. … If you ain’t got no money, ain’t nobody calls you honey.”

Survivors, according to The New York Times, include his (fourth) wife, Sylia, his four children, 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Kelsey Grammer had ‘mild’ heart attack

Source: www.celebritymound.com

A spokesman for Kelsey Grammer says the “Frasier” star is recovering in a Hawaii hospital after a mild heart attack this weekend. Stan Rosenfield says Grammer is “resting comfortably” in an undisclosed hospital after being stricken Saturday. Rosenfield says the 53-year-old actor will be released early this week.

Rosenfield says Grammer – the star of “Cheers,” “Frasier” and the recently canceled Fox sitcom “Back to You” – was paddle-boarding with his wife, Camille, when he experienced symptoms.

The couple lives in Kona, on Hawaii’s big island.

Rosenfield says Grammer was immediately taken to an area hospital where it was determined that he had suffered a “mild heart attack.” The spokesman says he is unaware of any history of heart trouble for Grammer.

Ted Kennedy’s Operation a Success

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s surgery for his malignant brain tumor was successful and “accomplished our goals,” his doctor at Duke Medical Center said Monday afternoon, according to a Kennedy family spokesperson.

A statement from the Massachusetts Democrat’s office also said the operation was being performed by one of the nation’s top neurosurgeons, Dr. Allan Friedman. He is “one of the thought leaders” and a giant in the field of neuro-oncology, Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, tells the Associated Press.

Monday morning it was announced that the senator, 76, had checked into the North Carolina hospital Sunday night in anticipation of Monday’s six-hour operation. The procedure reportedly began around 9 a.m.

It was expected that surgeons would attempt to remove as much of the tumor as possible while weighing the risk of harming healthy brain tissue that affects movement and speech.

“Many of us believe that the more you get out, the next treatments, whether they be radiation or chemotherapy, have a better chance of working because there’s less tumor there to fight,” explained Dr. Matthew Ewend, neurosurgery chief at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Kennedy was expected to remain at Duke for one week’s recuperation before seeking treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is scheduled to begin chemotherapy and radiation.

Charlie and Brooke: Kids Are the ‘Next Step’

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Newlyweds Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller are eager to take what Mueller calls “the next step”: starting a family.

Although the couple are knocking down reports that they’re already expecting, Sheen, 42, tells Extra: “Doesn’t mean it’s not part of the plan. It’s just not happening as we speak.”

And how extensive is that plan?

“Hopefully triplets!” says Mueller, 30. “Could you imagine if I really had triplets? He’d be like, ‘Whoa!’”

Sheen and Mueller exchanged vows in front of about 60 close friends and family last Friday. Among the guests were Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane and actress Rebecca Gayheart, who first introduced the couple in 2006.

“It was really special. Really beautiful,” Gayheart tells Extra. “We couldn’t be happier for them. There was a great sense of humor throughout the night too.”

Sheen is dad to three daughters already: Sam, 4, and Lola, 2, with ex-wife Denise Richards, and Cassandra, 23, with ex-girlfriend Paula Profitt.

Leona Lewis: ‘I Don’t Wear Little Miniskirts’

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Just call her the anti-Amy Winehouse. “Bleeding Love” singer Leona Lewis is enjoying the perks of her fame – just don’t expect to see her in the tabloids for raucous behavior. In a new interview with Blender, the British pop star says she’s fine with her squeaky clean image. “I don’t wear little miniskirts and low cut tops,” she says in the July issue. “If you want to show your bits off, it’s up to you.” Lewis, 23, tells the magazine she shies away from parties, too, preferring to stay home and watch a movie or play the video game Grand Theft Auto, though she says, “it’s a bit violent.”

Lewis also steers clear of alcohol because, well, she doesn’t like the taste. “When I was 18, I had a few glasses of Alcopop – they’re bubblegummy drinks with a bit of alcohol – and it was gross,” she says. “I’ve tasted champagne, which is gross. And I tasted wine, which I don’t like.”

Angelina Jolie: I Thought I’d Marry an Aid Worker, Not Fall for Brad Pitt

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Angelina Jolie says she didn’t expect to fall for Brad Pitt.

“After my last divorce, I said I was absolutely going to marry somebody in another field, an aid worker or something,” she reveals in July’s Vanity Fair.

“Then I met Brad, everything I wasn’t looking for, but the best man, the best father I could possibly wish for, you know?” she adds. “I don’t see him as an actor. I see him very much as a dad, as somebody who loves travel and architecture more than being in movies.”

Although Pitt, 44, seems to have taken more of an interest in humanitarian causes since their romance, Jolie, 32, says his passion for international affairs “was actually one of the things that brought us together.

“Though he wasn’t as publicly active,” she adds, “I found him to be very aware of the world, very curious, very compassionate. In his private way, he had been doing a lot. When we met, we realized our common goals were that we both wanted to be involved in the world and see what we could do.

“When it comes to common goals — orphans, orphans’ rights, children — we support each other,” she goes on. “It brings us together and makes our relationship work.”

Jolie also says that “people have made a lot out of it that we’re not, but we both have been married before, and it’s very easy to get married, but it’s not easy to build a family and be parents together. And maybe we’ve done it backwards, but we certainly feel married.”

The actress also sounded off on:

Naming her daughter Shiloh:

“It’s a biblical name, but we didn’t name her for that. It was a name my parents almost named their first child ‹ there was a miscarriage: Shiloh Baptist. Because my father had been shooting in Georgia and that was the most southern name [my parents] could come up with. It’s a name I always liked. I used to go under it in hotels: Shiloh Baptist. I’d gone under it when [Brad] called hotel rooms where I was staying.”

Being religious:
“[My mother] stopped going to confession at one point because she was having sex before marriage. To me, she represented what religion should be. She never preached. If things didn’t make sense to her, she never just accepted it. I had Communion, but she never forced me to go to church.

“Brad got me this great thing for Christmas. It’s a bookshelf that has a book on every religion. That’s how we plan to raise our kids. Teach them about all religions. They can pick one or be a student of all of them. We’ll celebrate Kwanzaa for our girl. We’ll celebrate moon and water festivals for our boys. We’ll take them to temples in certain countries. Also to church.”

Losing her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to cancer:
“When [my mother] passed [in 2007], I realized that somebody who lives life with that kind of dedication to their family is the most noble. I was aware of it growing up. I admired her. And I loved her. But in her passing she reminded me what matters. And what’s most fun: to put yourself aside for these other little people you’re raising.

“Mad always knew my mom was sick. So when [her death] happened, I sat him down and I told him how some people believe there’s a heaven where everybody goes and is together again. And they believe it’s very white and beautiful. And some believe — he’d just seen Casper — there are ghosts who are people and they are always around. And some believe it’s a long peaceful sleep. When I told him, and I was crying, ‘Grand-mère died today, we won’t be able to see her anymore, but she’ll always be around,’ he said, ‘Like she’s here now? Like she’s in that chair?’ And I said, ‘Well, I suppose she could be.’ And he accepted it. It’s funny. It’s like we teach kids the things that we want to believe. Then we see that they have such beautiful faith and it helps them go to bed and we’re in the other room not sleeping well.

“I had to be responsible for getting the morgue to pick [my mother’s] body up. She was in Cedars [Sinai, in Los Angeles]. All I had to do is remind myself that she’s my best girlfriend and she’s not in any more pain. I’m so happy for her. As much as I miss her, I’m a good enough friend not to have wanted her to stay in pain any longer.”

Talking again to dad Jon Voight:
“We don’t really have a relationship, but we’re in contact. And wish each other well. I think we’ve realized there’s been too much discussion. Him discussing me publicly. I’ve had to comment on him. I think it’s best that, if we try to have any relationship in the future, we do it quietly.

She said that she has never seen Voight’s 1979 Oscar-winning performance in Coming Home.

“Because that was when my father left my mom, and the woman who he cheated on her with is in the film,” Jolie says. (When rumors that Jolie had an affair with Pitt while he was wed to Jennifer Aniston, she denied them. “Do I need to defend that I’m a decent woman?” she said.)

Sarah Jessica Parker Duped by Dress Designer

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker is usually fashion-forward, but at last week’s NYC premiere of the film she found herself behind the times.

Parker, 43, was shocked to learn that her strapless Nina Ricci gown was worn earlier in the month by heiress Lauren (Davis) Santo Domingo to the Met’s Costume Institute Gala (where she walked the carpet with the dress’ designer, Olivier Theyskens).

Making matters worse, Lindsay Lohan wore the gown in an advertising campaign for Disney.

Parker told the New York Times that the designer had assured her the gown had only appeared in magazine shoots.

“Look, my affection for the dress hasn’t changed,” she said. “But what they did was so short-sighted. It’s just unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again.

“[The designer] didn’t say, ‘Well, actually I just escorted Lauren down the red carpet at the Met,’” said Parker, adding, “I just wish it had been handled differently and they had been straight about it.”

Kim Cattrall to star in HBO series

Source: www.celebritymound.com

“Sex and the City” co-star Kim Cattrall is back at HBO with another sex-themed single-camera comedy project set in New York.

Cattrall is set to star in and executive produce an adaptation of the British comedy series “Sensitive Skin,” which is being written and exec produced by Emmy-winning “The Sopranos” scribes Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green.

The project, in development at the pay cable network with a significant penalty attached to it, centers on a middle-aged wife and mother (Cattrall) in New York who rediscovers her sexuality and begins to question her place in the world and the choices she has made in life.

The original series, which aired on BBC Two for two seasons, was written and directed by Hugo Blick and starred Joanna Lumley as a well-to-do ex-model working at an art gallery in London.

“Sensitive Skin” falls under a development deal Cattrall inked with HBO when she signed on for the “Sex and the City” feature.

Cattrall, Burgess, Green and Blick are exec producing with Henry Normal, whose Baby Cow Prods. was behind the British series.

This is the second post-”Sex and the City” collaboration between Cattrall and HBO. In 2005, she exec produced and starred in the documentary “Kim Cattrall: Sexual Intelligence.”

“Sensitive Skin” also marks the latest British format to make its way to HBO’s development slate, along with the comedy “Suburban Shootout,” which is shooting a pilot written by Michelle Ashford and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and the recently picked up drama “Bad Girls,” which is being adapted by Alan Ball, Nancy Oliver and Raelle Tucker.

Cattrall, who won a Golden Globe for her role as Samantha on “Sex and the City,” recently starred in the ITV telefilm “My Boy Jack” in her native England.

Burgess and Green won three Emmys for their work on “Sopranos,” including two writing trophies for the episodes “Employee of the Month” and “Whitecaps.”

Naomi Campbell going bald?

Could hair loss be behind Naomi Campbell’s temper tantrums? The feisty supermodel started losing her hair “15 years ago,” fashion photographer Huggy Ragnarsson told The Sun newspaper.

Photos of Campbell in London on May 29, with what appeared to be a receding hairline, has launched the tress talk. Years of hair extensions are reportedly to blame. Ragnarsson told the Sun, “The hair stylist Sam McNight said to me in the ’90s, ‘She’d better be careful with those weaves, she’s going to lose her hair.’”

Al Reynolds Is Not An Official Model For Under Armour

Source: www.celebritymound.com

DESPITE online reports saying otherwise, a black-and-white photo of a half-naked Al Reynolds in Under Armour underwear is not an ad for the company. Fashion Web sites that posted the steamy shot had reported that Star Jones’ ex would be “the company’s first non-sports star to endorse a 30-piece line for Summer 2008″ and the ads would run in magazines beginning in July. But Under Armour rep Tai Foster said that’s not the image the company wants to portray. “I wanted to clarify what has been reported. Al Reynolds is not a spokesperson for Under Armour, nor is there any business relationship of any kind between the Under Armour brand and Al Reynolds.” A rep for Florida Memorial University, where Reynolds teaches, did not return a call for comment. Reynold’s rep, Howard Bragman, said, “Don’t try to make a shirtless picture something it’s not – that’s my comment.”

Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes Host A-List Housewarming Party

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes opened the doors of their new Beverly Hills mansion for an A-list housewarming party Saturday night.

The couple’s celebrity friends Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Brooke Shields, Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Parker and Kyra Sedgwick were among the guests.

Holmes’ extended family – including her parents – came in from Ohio for the event and children Isabella, 15, Connor, 13, and Suri, 2, were there.

Cruise and Holmes purchased the 1.3-acre $35 million estate last summer and spent a year on renovations.

Guests – mostly in black cocktail attire – began arriving around 9 p.m. They were driven up the long driveway to a large fountain by a valet service.

The party was both indoors and outdoors. Over 50 staff members from Wolfgang Puck catered the event, which ended around 1 a.m.

On the back lawn, cocktails and appetizers were served to guests who sat on white couches under heat lamps. The trees were adorned with white lights and an orchestra played music.

Tobey Mcguire (Holmes’ co-star in 2000’s Wonder Boys), Winfrey’s BFF Gayle King, Rita Wilson, Jeremy Piven and Kirstie Alley also attended.

Shields arrived with husband Chris Henchy. The party was held on her 43rd birthday.

Holmes will make her debut on Broadway this fall in All My Sons.

Legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent dies at 71

Source: www.celebritymound.com

French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent has died at the age of 71, hailed as a 20th century cultural innovator who revolutionized the way women dressed.

The couture creations of the reclusive Saint Laurent won global fine art status and he was widely considered to be one of an elite club of designers including Christian Dior and Coco Chanel who made Paris the fashion capital of the world.

His long-time companion, Pierre Berge, told RTL radio the designer had been diagnosed with a brain tumor last year and had died on Sunday in Paris.

From Princess Grace of Monaco to the actress Catherine Deneuve, Saint Laurent’s creations adorned many famous women but he was also the first designer to make luxury labels accessible to a wide audience through innovative ready-to-wear collections.

He made his appearance on the world stage at just 21 and built up a clothes, perfumes and accessories empire that resulted in a 1989 stock market flotation — the first by a fashion house.

But Saint Laurent also suffered from severe depression and underwent treatment for alcohol abuse and became increasingly withdrawn later in life.

The daily Le Figaro gave over its whole front page to the man it called “the world’s greatest couturier” and President Nicolas Sarkozy praised Saint Laurent as a creative genius. “He was convinced that beauty was a luxury that every man and woman needed,” Sarkozy said.

Berge told France Info radio: “Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power.”

“(But) he was someone who was very shy and introverted, who had only very few friends and hid himself from the world.”

A memorial mass will be held on Friday in the church Saint Roch in Paris, the traditional church of artists and musicians.

TUXEDO

Saint Laurent, who retired in 2002, was credited with changing forever what women wore, making the trouser suit a daytime staple and the tuxedo an elegant option.

He also popularized safari jackets and thigh-high boots, and his transparent blouses made near-nudity acceptable in high society.

“He completely revamped a woman’s wardrobe,” luxury underwear designer Chantal Thomass told French radio. “His fashion was full of color and inspired by art.”

The eldest child of a wealthy French industrialist, Saint Laurent was born and grew up in the then French colony of Algeria and showed a talent for design, making clothes for his younger sisters’ dolls.

At 17 he entered a Paris fashion school, and his sketch for a cocktail dress won first prize in an annual contest.

Introduced to Christian Dior, the gangly Saint Laurent was hired on the spot by the creator of the “New Look” and became his chief assistant. On Dior’s death in 1957, Saint Laurent became chief designer and swiftly outshone his mentor.

After his first collection introduced the widely copied “trapeze” silhouette with narrow shoulders and flared skirt, the shy 21-year-old was pushed out on to the Dior building balcony and crowds in the avenue below hailed him like royalty.

Saint Laurent directed Dior for three years, until drafted for military service during the Algerian war.

For a sensitive person whose homosexuality had made his school years a torture, army life was an ordeal. He had a nervous breakdown and spent nearly three months in hospital.

Berge arranged financial backing, and Saint Laurent presented his first collection under his own name in 1962.

The “YSL” empire grew steadily and Saint Laurent showed an instinctive ability to sense what the mood on the streets was and turn it into high fashion.

But by the late 1980s his health problems were an issue.

Insiders said Saint Laurent, who never read newspapers or listened to the radio, became increasingly cut off from reality and lost touch with all but a tiny group of friends.

“Fame has destroyed him,” Berge once said.

Despite the personal demons, his business empire thrived. The 1989 flotation was a runaway success.

But when the Gulf War erupted and the world economy slumped in the early 1990s, Berge and Saint Laurent sank into debt.

In 1992, YSL was absorbed by cosmetics and drugs company Sanofi, with Saint Laurent retaining creative control. Then in 1999 it was bought by the Gucci group, itself controlled by French luxury giant PPR.

Kurt’s ashes stolen?!

Source: www.celebritymound.com

THE music world was In Bloom-in’ shock last night after hearing that the ashes of grunge god KURT COBAIN have been PINCHED!

I can also reveal that the wife of the NIRVANA legend, COURTNEY LOVE, is said to be “suicidal” after finding Kurt’s remains missing from her Hollywood home.

She had kept the singer’s ashes in a pink teddy-bear-shaped bag along with a lock of his hair.

But a couple of weeks ago, she was horrified to discover them gone, along with thousands of pounds worth of clothes and jewellery.

Courtney said: “I can’t believe anyone would take Kurt’s ashes from me.

“I find it disgusting and right now I’m suicidal.

“If I don’t get them back I don’t know what I’ll do.” The sad news will sicken the millions of Cobain and Nirvana fans worldwide.

Kurt, DAVE GROHL and KRIST NOVOSELIC mesmerised the music world in the 90s with hits like In Bloom and Smells Like Teen Spirit.

The band has sold more than 62 million albums worldwide, with classic album Nevermind selling more than ten million copies alone—it’s still regarded by critics as one of the greatest albums ever made.

But in 1994, tragedy struck when Kurt killed himself with a shotgun while high on heroin. Some of his ashes were scattered in a Buddhist temple in New York, others were scattered in the Wishkah River near his home in Washington State, and the rest remained with Courtney…until recently, that is.

She said: “They were all I had left of my husband. I used to take them everywhere with me just so I could feel Kurt was still with me.

“Now it feels like I have lost him all over again.”

TATUM O’NEAL BUSTED FOR COKE & CRACK

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Troubled Oscar-winning actress Tatum O’Neal, who has spoken and written about her years-long battle with addiction, was busted last night just blocks from her Lower East Side luxury apartment – charged with buying cocaine and crack, sources said.

Sources told The Post the 44-year-old actress – who became the youngest-ever to snag an Oscar, at age 10, for her role in “Paper Moon” – was arrested at 7:30 p.m. by detectives from Manhattan South Narcotics on Clinton Street between East Broadway and Grand Street.

“When the police approached, she asked them, ‘You know who I am, right?’ ” one source said.

“Then she said, ‘I’m researching a part – I’m doing this for a part as a junkie.’ ”

The source said detectives found a pipe on O’Neal, daughter of actor Ryan O’Neal. The pipe and screen were clean.

“Then she said she’d been clean for two years, and that she’d just came out today,” the source said.

“Can’t we just forget about this?” sources said she begged the detectives.

The suspected drug dealer, Alan Garcia, 33, also was arrested, the sources said. Both were hauled into the 7th Precinct and were expected to spend the night in custody.

O’Neal lives in a building at East Broadway and Canal, The Forward, which used to house the Jewish newspaper of the same name.
“She’s cool – it’s the last thing I thought would happen,” said a security official at her apartment building. “I’m shocked.”

O’Neal, who has three grown kids with tennis bad-boy John McEnroe, wrote in her 2004 memoir “A Paper Life” that boozing and drug-taking was in her DNA.

Her mom, the late actress Joanna Moore, was an alcoholic and hooked on amphetamines even as she was riaising Tatum and her younger brother Griffin in Los Angeles.

“My own young life had eerily echoed Addie’s [her character in ‘Paper Moon’] even though my mother was still alive,” she wrote.
“In the grip of addiction, she had virtually abandoned me and Griffin, leaving us in squalor – as well as beaten and abused by the men in her life.”

Tatum took to the wild life early and hard, though she completed addiction rehab in 1996 and claimed to be clean.

But her acting career was in tatters. Last year, she began a comeback, however, landing film and TV roles, including the alcoholic shrew Maggie, sister of Denis Leary’s firefighter Tommy Gavin, in “Rescue Me.”

In an interview last year, she said she felt sorry for celeb-wreck Britney Spears, saying things started getting better for her when she left LA.

“I was thrust out there as a little kid. It was hard to cope,” she told Post columnist Liz Smith… “I used to walk with my head down. I was involved with drugs and alcohol. I had a lot of shame and self-hatred.”

She was charged early today with criminal possession of a controlled substance; Garcia with criminal sale of a controlled substance.
