From her nasty divorce and custody battle to her now-infamous performance at the 2007 VMAs to the dark period under the control of “manager” Sam Lutfi, it’s safe to say that the last two years were not the best in the young life of Britney Spears.

And now, one year after an erratic and distracted Brit stormed out of an OK! photoshoot, a very different woman sits down to talk openly about her two adorable sons, her father and the future of her nearly sidetracked career.

Having spent her young life in the spotlight, the 26-year-old mother of two tells OK! that she hopes her boys choose not to choose a career in entertainment. “I’d love them unconditionally if they wanted to,” she explains. “I’d just as soon they have a more normal childhood.

Perhaps some of Britney’s reluctance comes from seeing her little sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, have to face so much public scrutiny over her recent pregnancy. “I was shocked a little bit,” says Brit. “She’s always been the baby, and now the baby was having a baby. It was mind-boggling.”

The pop superstar also tells OK! that she wants her boys to be close to her newborn niece. “I’m sure the boys will be like big brothers to Maddie,” she says.

In an unexpected twist, Britney’s downward spiral in recent years ultimately helped to heal the bonds between the singer and her parents, Lynne and Jamie Spears.

“God has a way of taking something bad and turning it into something good,” explains Jamie, who also spoke exclusively to OK!. “If this hadn’t happened, I would never have been able to get back with my daughter and have this relationship I have with these two little boys.”

Another positive that’s risen out of her darkest days is Britney’s new album, which she expects to hit stores in six to nine months. “I think it is more urban,” she tells OK!. “I’m writing every day, right here at the piano in this living room… This is my best work ever.”

You can believe your eyes – that’s really Britney Spears joking with MTV’s Video Music Awards host Russell Brand in new ads for the upcoming show.

“You are Britney Spears, right? I’m not dreaming this am I,” asks the British comedian in the ad, which also includes a 9,000-lb. elephant in the background.

“No, this is real,” Spears assures the show’s host – and pinches him to prove it.

In the second spot, Brand, who is well known in the U.K. but not in the U.S., presses Spears to remember his full name – which she doesn’t.

“You will remember that name because I think pretty soon it’s going to be your surname,” he quips. “Britney Brand.”

While MTV cannot confirm whether Spears will appear on the show airing on Sept. 7, Spears’s promo appearance is a promising sign. The singer, who has been nominated 17 times, has yet to walk away with a win and is nominated for two this year. She is up for best female video and best pop video.

Lynne Spears’ promised book has shaped up to be less of a parenting handbook and more of a juicy memoir of a Southern mother raising a pop star in the midst of paparazzi mayhem.

Titled Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World, the 272-page book published by Thomas Nelson—and to be released Sept. 16—is sure to be a page-turner.

According to prereviews from Barnes & Noble, the book describes how Lynne was an ordinary mother changed by the success of her daughter Britney and how it pushed the family onto the worldwide stage. The book also promises to reveal a rarely glimpsed side of Lynne, her celebrity daughters, son Bryan and ex-husband Jamie.

“The stories Lynne shares reveal the heart of a mother who struggles to keep faith at the center of her life through its many unexpected twists and serendipitous turns,â€? the prereview states. The book retails for $24.99.

According to BreatheHeavy, a Britney fansite, the publisher says the book sheds light on much more, even touching on Britney’s breakdown, Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy and the infamous Sam Lutfi.

This is not Lynne’s first foray into the publishing arena. She coauthored the novel A Mother’s Gift with her daughter in 2001, way back when Britney’s career still seemed like a family blessing.

Britney Spears might have kissed Madonna at VMA’s in 2003, but don’t expect her to play a killer lesbian stripper in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported that the pop star would return to the big screen in a remake of the 1965 cult film “Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!,” directed by Tarantino.

“Quentin is convinced Britney will be brilliant. She’s delighted. She thinks it could turn her career around,” a source told the British paper. “It is perfect Tarantino material. He wanted to get Britney first. She’s playing the most important character.”
A rep for Brit denied the reports, telling Access Hollywood, “Though she definitely intends to explore acting roles down the road, right now she’s concentrating on recording her next album”.

Brit’s camp weren’t the ones shooting down the outlandish casting.

A source close to Quentin Tarantino told Access, “There is no truth to this.”

Britney Spears will be under the conservatorship of her father Jamie until December 31, it was decided in court Thursday.

“Ms. Spears is reluctantly agreeing to extend the temporary [conservatorship],” L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz said after the hearing.

The commissioner also said Jamie’s conservatorship could be “terminated earlier.” A status hearing was set for October 28.

Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallet were put in control of the pop singer’s finances and estate in February after she was hospitalized in January.

While Jamie was not spotted at the courthouse Thursday, Britney’s brother Bryan was. When asked by Usmagazine.com if he had a comment, he shook his head.

Since Spears’ father was put in charge, she has reunited with her sons, Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 22 months.

Kevin Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told Usmagazine.com that a reunion “couldn’t have happened without” the help of Spears’ father.

“We were able to get it to a point where everyone was comfortable,” Kaplan told Us.

“We’re just very positive about it,” he said. “Having her dad stabilizing everything is a good thing.”

An attorney for Britney Spears said Wednesday that he will not seek an extension for a restraining order against Osama “Sam” Lutfi, but that doesn’t mean the pop star wants her former sidekick back in her life.

“Britney has made clear to everyone that she does not want to be further harassed or contacted in any way by Osama ‘Sam’ Lutfi, now or at anytime in the future,” Spears’ attorney Samuel D. Ingham III said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Lutfi, for the time being, seems willing to go along with those wishes.

He called the AP late Wednesday and released the following statement: “Mr. Lutfi and Mr. Spears have mutually agreed in private that no hearing or order is necessary at this time.”

He declined further comment.

Attorneys for Spears and her father, James, are expected to appear in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday morning to give an update on the conservatorship. A hearing on a temporary restraining order barring Lutfi from having contact with the pop singer was also scheduled for Thursday. The order issued earlier this year required Lutfi to stay 250 yards away from Spears or her homes.

Lutfi represented one of the strangest twists in Spears’ downward spiral earlier this year. The singer’s mother accused Lutfi - who described himself as a friend and sometime manager - in court papers of keeping Spears a hostage in her own home, drugging her and taking over her finances.

He was a fixture in Spears’ life during a period when the star exhibited erratic behavior, including being photographed without underwear, and occasionally looking dazed in public and had to twice be hospitalized.

Spears’ father has control over his 26-year-old daughter’s personal life and finances.

That power negates the need for a restraining order against Lutfi since James Spears’ role as conservator allows him to decide who sees his daughter, according to Ingham’s statement.

He serves as a court-appointed counsel representing Spears’ interest in the ongoing conservatorship case.

“During the temporary conservatorship, the conservators have the power to insure that Lutfi will not harm Britney anymore,” Ingham wrote.

Thursday’s hearing had originally been scheduled to decide whether the conservatorship should be made permanent, but Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz decided weeks ago that she would instead consider other issues.

It is unclear how long Spears’ affairs will remain under her father’s control, but Ingham wrote that he does not expect her feelings about Lutfi to change.

“If Mr. Lutfi makes any future attempt to contact Britney after the temporary conservatorship has concluded, Britney has made clear she will take all appropriate legal action,” Ingham wrote.

After all the efforts Britney Spears and her conservator-father Jamie put into getting her life back on track, Brit could soon come face-to-face with a ghost from her troubled past. In Touch Weekly reports that her former bad-influence-BFF Sam Lutfi hopes to rekindle his relationship with the pop star.

On July 31, Jamie’s conservatorship is set to expire, and, coincidentally, that same day Britney’s old pal Sam is due in court to address the restraining order that keeps him at least 250 yards away from her at all times. On the off-chance that Jamie’s role isn’t renewed, and Sam gets his hanger-on freedom restored, the singer could be left in a vulnerable position.

“Sam believes that he and Britney are still friends,” an insider revealed to In Touch. “If the restraining order is lifted, he’ll be back in her life for sure.”

According to the source, Sam doesn’t see the problem with that. In fact, he denies the accusations Britney’s mother Lynne leveled against him in court that led to the order, including that he drugged and manipulated Britney. From his point of view, he’s the wronged party.

“Sam insists it will come out that the restraining order was against the wrong guy,” said the insider. So lifting the restraining would give him the chance to “protect Britney from the vultures out there.”

Britney Spears made a surprise appearance at a fundraiser for Jenny McCarthy’s autism charity Generation Rescue Saturday in Los Angeles.

As guests like McCarthy’s beau and Charlie Sheen and wife Brooke Mueller made the rounds, Spears, 26, sipped on red wine.

Carrey’s daughter Jane also belted out a few Frank Sinatra and Jackson 5 tunes.

Spears, 26, “definitely looked happy,” a witness tells Usmagazine.com. “She was clapping and smiling a lot.”

It was Spears’ first public outing since reaching a custody agreement with ex Kevin Federline last week.

While Federline gets sole custody, Spears gets three visits a week from Sean Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden James, 1 1/2, including two overnights.

If all goes well, she could have her boys roughly 40 percent of the time, her attorney, Laura Wasser, has said.

Wasser told the Associated Press the “difference” in Spears “from the beginning of this year to now is astonishing.”

Spears is spending her summer recording a new album.

Britney Spears’s custody settlement with her ex Kevin Federline, in which he retained sole custody of the couple’s two sons, came at a price.

A source close to the singer confirms she’ll now pay Federline $20,000 a month in child support, an increase from $15,000.

Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, also demanded and received $250,000 for his work on the case, the source adds.

“All Britney was seeking was a formalization of her increased visitation that she’s obtained over recent weeks, and the additional overnight,” the source said. “She won both of those requests.”

Spears, who is represented by lawyer Laura Wasser, currently sees her sons twice a week with one overnight. The source adds that she will get an additional overnight by year’s end, barring any setbacks.

At a press conference following Friday’s hearing, Kaplan declined to address any monetary settlement. “This has been a long ordeal [for Kevin],” Kaplan said, “and for it to be over makes him very happy.”

Britney Spears and her ex Kevin Federline have reached a custody settlement in their epic court battle over their two sons – averting a scheduled trial.

According to the agreement, which still needs to be signed off on by the court, Federline retains sole custody of the couple’s two sons, Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden, 1 1/2. Spears – who’s currently allowed two visits and one overnight per week – will get more visitation rights.

“The case has been settled,” Federline’s attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan (working with attorney James Simon), tells PEOPLE. “This is the end of a two-year journey.”

Spears’s attorney, Laura Wasser, said outside the courtroom after the hearing: “Britney’s doing great. She’s very pleased [with the settlement]. The kids are with her right now.”

Without giving details, Wasser confirmed that Spears did win “more custodial time” with the boys. A source close to Spears confirms the singer will gain an additional overnight by year’s end, barring any setbacks.

Spears, 26, and Federline, 30, split in November 2006. When their divorce was finalized in July 2007, they shared 50-50 custody. But things took a dramatic turn when Spears – the pop powerhouse worth an estimated $100 million – was twice forcibly hospitalized early this year for mental health issues.

Spears lost all visitation rights with her kids until the following month, and her father Jamie stepped in to take legal control of her affairs.

Despite the settlement, a judge can always modify custody arrangements.

“Until the kids turn 18, we can expect in years to come that Britney and Kevin will be back in court,” says L.A. family lawyer Lynn Soodik, who is not involved with the case. “Britney will have a better chance of winning more custody once she regains her health. This is just the end of Round One.”

Britney Spears’s summer won’t be all rest and relaxation this year: The pop singer will be spending time hard at work on her yet-untitled next album, according to her manager.

“Britney Spears is spending her summer in the recording studio, working on a brand new album,” manager Larry Rudolph announced Tuesday in a statement released by Jive Records.

“She’s working with a team of top-notch producers and songwriters, and we’re very excited about what she’s accomplished so far. No album release date has been confirmed yet.”

Spears spent time in and out of the studio in the spring, fueling rumors of an upcoming album. But at that time it was “recreational,” Rudolph insisted.

“She’s been going to the studio, she’s been having some fun. But it’s all recreational for her,” he told PEOPLE in May. “She’s like, ‘I want to go to the studio because I want to have some fun’ and that’s what it’s all about. There’s no schedule, there’s no agenda, there’s no anything. She is just enjoying herself.”

In the studio, “She’s giggly,” he added. “Some days she’ll go in and get nothing done. Some times she’ll just play around a little bit.”

Planning Ahead
But Rudolph said there was a reason behind the playtime. “She’s the type of person who has the eye of the tiger,” he said. “She’ll likely wake up one day and decide she wants to do more than that. Whether that is a day from now, a month from now or a year from now or five years from now, I have no idea.”

Lucky for her fans, she woke up sooner rather than later.

After a difficult year that included an ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline and two well-publicized visits to the hospital, Rudolph says Spears is feeling strong and her old self again.

“She’s got people around her that really care about her and are there to point her in the right direction in respect to the things she should be concentrating on – her life.”

Last week, Spears filmed a video segment in Hollywood that is expected to be part of Madonna’s upcoming Sticky & Sweet tour.

“Britney is getting back in touch with Britney,” Rudolph said in May. “And she’s doing an amazing job at that.”

It was a family affair Saturday as Lynne Spears hung out with Britney and her sons Preston and Jayden for an overnight visit at the star’s Studio City home.

In town since Wednesday, Lynne and Britney have been enjoying some mother-daughter bonding, shopping at the True Religion warehouse and Pottery Barn on Friday before enjoying a “girls dinner” of salad, sushi rolls, and fish at Bond St. restaurant with two of Britney’s pals.

“Britney walked in with a big smile and introduced her mom to the staff,” says an observer. “She looked gorgeous, and I have never seen her in a better mood. She was laughing the whole time she was here. Britney seemed to have the best time hanging out with her mom and friends.”

Meanwhile, dad Jamie spent the weekend at his new house in Santa Monica.

Britney Spears and Madonna’s latest hookup has been temporarily derailed by a technical glitch.

Spears had been scheduled to begin shooting a video montage for Madonna’s upcoming tour this morning at the Lots soundstage in Hollywood. But production insiders say that because the set was not finished in time, cameras will not roll until tomorrow.

The set features an elevator, in, around and on which Spears will dance.

“The video will be very deep,” a source in the Spears camp tells E! News. “You’ve never seen Britney like this before. It will blow your mind.”
Madonna reached out to Britney to do the project, says the source.

The Material One’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, would only say that “there is footage being shot of Britney some time this week in conjunction with Madonna’s upcoming tour” and that the segment was not a music video.

“That is all the information I have available,” the rep added. “The rest is a secret.”

The last time Madonna and Britney Spears shared a stage together, the pop stars locked lips at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards in a kiss that shocked and delighted their fans.

But now, Access Hollywood has learned the music powerhouses will once again share the stage in Madonna’s upcoming “Sticky & Sweet” world tour — though not exactly live.

Despite rumors that Brit would join Madge onstage, Britney will join Madonna on her tour, but only through a taped video performance, Access has confirmed.

“Britney’s doing a video piece this week for Madonna’s new tour,” Brit’s manager, Larry Rudolph, told Access.

Britney is scheduled to be filmed for Madge’s tour at some point this week, Madonna’s rep, Liz Rosenberg, confirmed to Access.
However, what exactly the video will be is a “secret,” Rosenberg added.

As for a surprise appearance by Brit on stage alongside Madonna, fans should not hold their breath, according the rep.
“I do not believe that Britney will be appearing live on the tour,” she added.

Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet,” with Britney on video, kicks off October 4 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Britney Spears wants to move from her L.A. house to “a lower density, more quiet and less trafficked neighborhood,” according to a court document filed by her co-conservators, father Jamie and attorney Andrew Wallet.

The singer would like a home “more accessible to parks and recreation areas” for her children, Sean Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden James, 1 1/2, the document says.

Saturday night was the first time Sean and Jayden spent an overnight visit with Spears, 26, since she was hospitalized at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in January.

The sale of her L.A. home would be in “the best interest of [Spears], her Estate and her minor children,” the document says.

Earlier this month, Spears was granted permission to sell the six-bedroom home. At the time, mom Lynne told the court that her daughter “intends to return to Louisiana,” her home state.

Meanwhile, Spears and ex Kevin Federline are preparing for a custody trial, set to begin August 25. Federline currently has primary custody of their children.

The boys were dropped off Saturday and picked up around 10 a.m. Sunday, according to a source.

“Britney was very upset after the kids left,” the source tells Usmagazine.com. “She now does not know when she will get them next for an overnight. She complains it could be next week, or it could be three months.”

At a hearing last Tuesday, Spears, 26, was granted overnight privileges.

Asked if she were pleased with the judge’s ruling, she smiled and told Us, “yes.”

Meanwhile, Spears and ex Kevin Federline — who was spotted partying in Miami over the weekend — are gearing up for a custody trial, set to begin August 25.

Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan told E! that a mediation session last Thursday didn’t result in a custody agreement.

Federline is seeking sole physical and legal custody of sons Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden, 1 1/2 and wants Spears to continue her current visitation terms.

Said Kaplan, “If the existing arrangement was acceptable to both parties … we wouldn’t have to go to trial. But that didn’t happen.”
