Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer have called it quits, multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE.

“They had a great time together but they are just in different places in their lives right now,” says a source of Aniston, 39, and Mayer, 30, who kicked off their courtship in April.

A friend of Mayer adds that a reconciliation isn’t necessarily out of the question: “He never ends things with a clean slate. He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good.”

The split was first reported Wednesday by the U.K.’s Mirror, which said the couple split earlier this week, after initially deciding to spend some time apart.

Reps for Aniston and Mayer have declined to comment.

Jennifer Aniston’s new summer movie, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You’, has been pushed back.

The film — the actress’ first release since the surprise hit The Break-Up two years ago — has been shifted from Aug. 1 to Oct. 24, a New Line insider has said.

“That is the tentative new release date, though I don’t believe it’s 100 percent official yet. It’s definitely no longer August 1.”

According to sources close to the former ‘Friends’ star, Aniston’s big-budget romantic comedy has quietly been moved-back because of mounting buzz for the Sex and the City film, which is expected to be a big draw among female audiences this summer.

The move underscores a professional rivalry between Jen and Sarah Jessica Parker. “Jen was looking forward to going up against the Sex ensemble — especially Sarah Jessica — and some of the other summer blockbusters,” the source tells Life and Style magazine. “They’ve never been friends in real life, and probably never will be.

“But Jen’s convinced her film has a superior story and more attractive cast. People are going to compare these movies and she doesn’t regret taking part in the project. This is the script that lured her back to work after taking two years off. She’s standing by her belief that it is a worthy picture.”

Jennifer Aniston and producing partner Kristin Hahn are forming their own production company, Echo Films, which will  reportedly start with a first-look deal at Universal Pictures.

“We’re drawn to stories about people finding their voice and finding their way because they help us … [make] sense of our lives through the stories of others,” Aniston said in a statement. “That’s why we chose the name Echo, to echo back an idea, a challenge, something that resonates through all of us.”

According to industry magazine Variety, the pair have already acquired the rights to several projects – some designed as star vehicles for Aniston.

They include the rights to Jane Fallon’s U.K. bestseller Getting Rid of Matthew and Laura Dave’s The Divorce Party.

The duo — both formerly part of Plan B films with Aniston’s ex-husband Brad Pitt — are also tackling true-life stories, including Counter-Clockwise (about a Harvard aging study) and The Goree Girls (about a wrongly accused woman who starts an all-female band in prison).

The former ‘Friends’ stars, along with Cox’s husband David Arquette, and fellow couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale – and Orlando Bloom, Kate Beckinsale, Rashida Jones, Brad Pitt, James Marsden and Eva Longoria Parker, are all serving on the honorary advisory board of Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation.

Epidermolysis Bullosa is a rare and debilitating genetic skin condition that primarily affects children. Cox and Arquette are helping spearhead the awareness- and money-raising effort on behalf of research – with a goal of $1 million in two weeks.

“EB is very personal to me so I’m happy to be a part of this $1 million challenge,” Cox, 43, said in a statement. “Now is such an important time to put the spotlight on EB and ensure that research can continue at a fast pace.”
