Morgan Freeman & Wife Divorcing After 24 Years Of Marriage

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Days after he was involved in a serious car accident, a friend of “Dark Knight” star Morgan Freeman confirmed to Access Hollywood that the actor is getting a divorce.

Freeman and his wife of 24-years, costumer Myrna Colley-Lee, “are involved in a divorce action,” the actor’s Mississippi-based attorney and business partner Bill Luckett told Access Hollywood. “And for legal and practical purposes, [Freeman and Colley-Lee] have been separated since December of 2007.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Freeman was involved in an accident over the weekend, which saw the car he was driving flip. The actor and his female passenger, identified as Demaris Meyer, were driving on Mississippi Highway 32 in a rural area of Tallahatchie County at 11:30 PM on Sunday evening, when Freeman’s car went off the right side of the road and flipped over.

Freeman and Meyer, who has been described as the actor’s friend, were on the way to Freeman’s home when the accident occurred.

The doors were jammed on the vehicle and both of them had to be removed from the car with the Jaws of Life, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed to Access.

Though the accident was serious, Freeman was conscious as he was pulled him from the car, according to Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, who was on the scene of the accident.

“He was lucid, conscious,” McFerrin told the Associated Press. “He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point.”

When an onlooker attempted to take a photo with a cell phone, Freeman joked, “no freebies, no freebies,” McFerrin told the AP.

Freeman and Meyer were airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Memphis, where the actor underwent surgery after suffering a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage in the crash.

Freeman’s car appeared to have gone airborne from the highway into a ditch, according to McFerrin.

The accident is currently under investigation, but no alcohol was involved, Mississippi Highway Patrol told Access. The spokesperson went on to say that no charges have been filed against Freeman.

Freeman won an Oscar for his work in 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby.”

The veteran actor owns a home in Charleston, Miss, and is also a co-owner of a blues club and a restaurant in Clarksdale, Miss., which is near where the accident took place.

This is the mangled wreckage of Morgan Freeman’s car after the horrifying crash which left the actor fighting for his life.

The 71-year-old was airlifted to hospital with multiple broken bones following the accident in Mississippi.

The Oscar-winning star and a female passenger were cut free from the vehicle after it veered off the highway and flipped over several times before ending up in a ditch.

Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima when the smash happened at 11.30pm on Sunday night near his home in Mississippi, where he lives with his wife Myrna.

Emergency crews flew Freeman and his passenger, Demaris Meyer, to a hospital in Memphis more than 100 miles away.

The star suffered a broken arm, broken elbow and shoulder damage in the crash and spent four and a half hours on the operating table.

‘Morgan is doing well after his surgery to reconnect nerves and repair damage in his left arm and hand,’ his spokeswoman Donna Lee said.

‘The surgery lasted four and a half hours.

‘He’s visiting with family this morning [Tuesday]. As of this morning he’s up and walking around and looking forward to his release in a few days.’

A hospital spokesman had initially described his condition as ‘serious’.

Freeman, who won an Oscar for best supporting actor in Million Dollar Baby in 2005, appears in the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight, which was released in Britain two weeks ago.

He is the latest cast member of the Batman film to be hit with bad fortune.

Tragedy hit the film when Heath Ledger died of a drug overdose while filming the role of Joker.

The actor has been tipped for a posthumous Oscar for his critically-acclaimed performance.

The ‘curse’ of the Dark knight first struck when a technician was killed in a stunt car crash while the film was in production.

Leading man Christian Bale was the next to be hit by bad luck when he was arrested for assault on the eve of the London premiere.

There is still no information on Freeman’s passenger Miss Meyer’s condition and her link to the star of Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption is not yet known.

A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman said Miss Meyer, of Memphis, owned the car Freeman was driving.

The wreckage was swiftly removed from the crash scene for investigation, but debris from the vehicle was found strewn across the bank.

The car’s rear view mirror was found amongst the grassy bank alongside the highway.

He said there was ‘no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved,’ and both had been wearing seatbelts.

The police refused to comment on reports that Freeman had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Clay McFerrin, editor of the Sun Sentinel in Charleston, Mississippi, said he arrived soon after the accident happened on Sunday night.

Mr McFerrin said Freeman ‘was lucid, conscious.

‘He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point’

He said bystanders tried to take photographs at the rescue scene, prompting Freeman to joke: ‘No freebies, no freebies.’

‘They had to use the Jaws of Life (hydraulic cutters) to extract him from the vehicle,’ he said.

Freeman lives in Mississippi in a 126-acre ranch near Charleston and also has a home in New York.

He has a daughter, Morgana, from his previous marriage to Jeanette Bradshaw, which ended in 1979.

He adopted Miss Bradshaw’s daughter, Deena.

Memphis-born Freeman has two sons, Alfonso and Saifoulaye, from earlier relationships.

Freeman is due to star as Nelson Mandela in the Human Factor which is currently in pre-production.

The actor once commented that moving back to the area he grew up was ‘one of the smartest moves I’ve made in life’.

He said: ‘My aim in life, when I graduated from high school, was to get out of Mississippi.

‘I started coming back in about 1979, because my parents moved back, which I couldn’t understand. What in the world would make you come back here? It took me about 20 years to figure that out.’

Morgan Freeman seriously injured in car crash

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was hospitalized in serious condition Monday after the car he was driving left a rural road in the Mississippi Delta and flipped several times.

Freeman, 71, was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn., about 90 miles north of the accident in rural Tallahatchie County.

The actor “has a broken arm, broken elbow and minor shoulder damage, but is in good spirits,” according to a statement from Donna Lee, Freeman’s publicist. A hospital spokeswoman said Freeman was in serious condition but would not discuss his injuries.

“He is having a little bit of surgery this afternoon or tomorrow to help correct the damage,” Lee’s statement said. “He says he’ll be OK and is looking forward to a full recovery.”

Freeman, who won an Oscar for his role in “Million Dollar Baby,” is among the stars in “The Dark Knight,” now in theaters. His screen credits also include “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Freeman and a companion were traveling on a dark, two-lane highway that cuts through the expansive farmlands of the Mississippi Delta when the car ran off the side of the road shortly before midnight Sunday, authorities said. The vehicle flipped several times but landed upright in a ditch alongside Mississippi Highway 32, about 5 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said rescuers had to use the jaws of life to remove Freeman from the car.

“He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point,” said Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, who arrived at the scene soon after the accident happened.

McFerrin said it appeared Freeman’s car was airborne when it left the highway.

Bystanders converged on the accident scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor, McFerrin said.

When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, “no freebies, no freebies,” McFerrin said.

Williams said Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima that belonged to Demaris Meyer of Memphis.

“There’s no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved,” Williams said. He said both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts. The woman’s condition was not immediately available.

Freeman was born in Memphis, Tenn., but spent much of his childhood in the Mississippi Delta. He is a co-owner of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale.

“I’m definitely concerned,” country singer and fellow Mississippian Steve Azar, whose video for his hit “Waitin’ on Joe” featured Freeman, said Monday. The two have also worked charity events together. “He’s been the best ambassador our state has ever had.”

“He could live anywhere in the world and he came back home,” Azar said. “I just think it shows a lot about him as a person and how grounded he is.”

The hospital where Freeman is being treated is commonly known as The Med, and is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis.

Morgan Freeman Opens Up in Nov/Dec Issue of AARP The Magazine

Source: www.celebritymound.com

For the November/December issue of AARP The Magazine (available this week) Morgan Freeman is on the cover and he opened up about some of his personal struggles early on in his life and career. I think it’s pretty interesting to note that his rise to fame only occurred after the age of 50 – people assume he’s been a star since he was young!

Morgan Freeman talks about being disheartened with his career in the late ‘70s in the November/December issue of AARP The Magazine:

“I was depressed. I was doing a television show, and I hated it. So I was very upset with myself, because now I was doing something I no longer want to be doing, just for the money, and that’s a bad place to be.”

On growing up and currently living in Mississippi, Morgan Freeman tells the November/December issue of AARP The Magazine:

“You know, you go around the world, and you have eaten in the best restaurants and stayed in the best hotels, but here, there is peace and quiet and solitude. And the realization that this has always represented safety.”
