SCARLETT Johansson has regular e-mail contact with presidential hopeful Barack Obama, but it may be because her twin brother, Hunter, works for him. Johansson said last week she offers Obama advice by e-mail and is “amazed” he finds the time to reply to her. “Someone like the senator, who is constantly traveling and constantly ‘on,’ how can he return these personal e-mails?” she gushed to Politico. Hunter, who was working as a community liaison for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer for over a year, left that job a few weeks ago. It’s not clear what his position is within the Obama campaign. “He was one of the nicest, most unpretentious employees ever,” said one Stringer staffer. “Nobody cared he was Scarlett’s brother; we all forgot the last name. He wants to go change the world, and I guess the US president is greater than the Manhattan one,” the insider laughed.

Scarlett Johansson was left at home in New York after a film studio refused to pay for the star’s bloated demands to attend the Cannes Film Festival to launch Woody Allen’s latest movie.

Penelope Cruz and Rebecca Hall, her co-stars in the film ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’, soaked up all the glory from crowds as they ascended the fabled red carpet of Cannes.

It must have been pretty galling for Johansson, 23, when reports trickled back to the U.S. about the ten minute standing ovation the film received Saturday night after the black-tie audience saw the film.

t also stars Oscar-winner Javier Bardem, who couldn’t make the film’s gala for personal family reasons.

However, no one burst into tears because Johansson was absent.

“Nobody cared she wasn’t there”, snapped a prominent New York socialite as she noted, approvingly, that Cruz looked stunning in a low-cut gown designed by Marquesa while Hall, daughter of theatre legend Sir Peter Hall, was sparkling in a tumbling silk creation by Alberto Ferretti.

“The movie belonged to Penelope and Rebecca anyway with great help from Javier,” the socialite added.

The French branch of Warner Brothers Films, distributers of Vicky Cristina Barcelona in France, had spent weeks negotiating with Johansson’s representatives about flying her to Cannes.

They were willing, and happy, to pay for flights, hotel, provide a limousine, arrange for designers to show her gowns and for her to share hair and make-up designers with Cruz and Hall.

However, Johansson demanded her own exclusive make-up consultant at a cost of 5,000 Euros a day, which was felt a tad too much for a four day trip where looking after the star’s tresses and powdering her nose would cost a total of 20,000 Euros.

Then there was the problem over an hotel.

The film’s director and his leading ladies were delighted to be staying in the centre of Cannes to make it easier for them to attend screenings, public events and to do interviews for TV and press.

Johansson wanted to be at an hotel way out in the sticks, some 25 to 30 miles away.

“It was crazy. Penelope and Rebecca were going to be working very hard and it wasn’t acceptable that Scarlett would be having to come in from that distance every day, most likely turning up late and it would have thrown schedules into a lot of confusion.

“Also, I think, while Woody’s terribly fond of Scarlett, he was a little upset that she wasn’t being a team player”, an executive connected to the film told the Daily Mail.

Scarlett Johansson couldn’t be happier she’s getting married to boyfriend  Ryan Reynolds — and the actress’ friends feel the same.

“I was just so happy when she told me [about her engagement],” said  Johansson pal Roland Mouret.

“It’s something she’s really wanted – to meet someone and get married,” he added. “She’s just such a great person and I’m so happy for her and wish her every happiness. She deserves it.”

The Lost in Translation actress, 23, met fashion designer Mouret when she was filming in London in 2004 and stopped by his studio. She then helped put him on the A-list fashion map by wearing his coral taffeta gown to the 2005 Golden Globes, followed by a black Mouret number to the Academy Awards.

But he has no intention of designing the beauty’s wedding dress. “No, no – it’s not me,” he said, laughing.

Scarlett Johansson’s wedding dress is in good hands — Paul McCartney’s fashion designer daughter, Stella, has taken it upon herself to put together the actress’ bridal gown.

“I’m definitely doing her wedding dress,” Stella, 36, told People magazine at a cocktail party she hosted at her West Hollywood boutique Tuesday night.

However, the Lost In Translation star, 23, hasn’t the faintest idea McCartney is designing the gown for her big day. “She doesn’t know it yet,” said Stella.

Stella created Madonna’s dress for her 2000 wedding to Guy Ritchie; and for Scarlett, she’s planning “some kind of dodgy, black thing,” McCartney joked. “Latex! Latex for Scarlett!”

On a more serious note, McCartney said, “I’m so thrilled for her.”

Scarlett Johansson has become engaged to her actor boyfriend Ryan Reynolds after a one year courtship.

The Lost In Translation actress looked delighted as she showed off her new diamond ring for the first time as she attended the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in New York City last night.

The 23-year-old and Canadian beau Reynolds, 31, started dating in March 2007 - a month after the Just Friends actor ended his three-year engagement to singer Alanis Morissette.

Johansson’s representative Marcel Pariseau confirmed the couple’s engagement to People magazine on Monday.

She said: “They’re both thrilled.”

Pariseau declined to say exactly when the couple got engaged, but admitted it was recently. They are yet to set a wedding date.

Johansson initially denied reports in February that the couple were getting married after she was spotted looking at wedding gowns at the Monique Lhuillier boutique in LA.

Before she starting dating Reynolds last year, Johansson was in a two-year relationship with her Black Dahlia co-star Josh Hartnett and previously dated actor/singer Jared Leto.

Friends of the couple believe they may delay the wedding until after this year because they are so busy.

Johansson’s debut album Anywhere I Lay My Head is released on May 20 and she has two movies Vicky Cristina Barcelona and He’s Just Not That Into You coming out this summer.

She is currently filming New York, I Love You in her hometown of NYC, while Reynolds is currently making romantic comedy The Proposal with Sandra Bullock four hours away in Boston.

Scarlett Johansson is set to marry her beau Ryan Reynolds, the actress’ rep, Marcel Pariseau, has confirmed.

“They’re both thrilled,” says Pariseau.

Johansson, 23, and Reynolds, 31, have been dating since Spring 2007. The couple have not set a wedding date.

The Lost in Translation star is expected to show off her engagement ring at Monday night’s Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala in New York. Sources close to the actress say she is eager to “show off her rock” with her Dolce & Gabbana gown.

On May 20, Scarlett Johansson’s Tom Waits covers album, titled ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head,’ sees its release, with guest spots from David Bowie and production by TV on the Radio’s David Sitek.

“When I had the idea to do an album of Tom Waits songs, before I had even met Dave [Sitek], someone suggested I sing ‘Falling Down,’” Johansson tells Spinner. “But I decided it was too corny for me to do just because it has the lyric about ‘Scarlett and me.’ But Dave hadn’t even noticed it. When I mentioned it, he thought the synchronicity was crazy and I never even thought twice about it after that. I was like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’”
“With ‘Falling Down,’ our pursuit of making one song with both Kermit the Frog and David Bowie on it became a success,” Sitek adds.

Word from spywitnesses is that “The Proposal” star Ryan Reynolds and his galpal, Scarlett Johansson, had a bit of a lovers’ spat in the Financial District the other day.

According to Someone Who Was There, the Tinseltown lovebirds were walking on Arch Street down by the church and having a raaather heated discussion.

“The Ryan guy was clearly being a baby,” said our spy. “She kept grabbing his arm and he’d yank it away and she’d keep saying ‘Ry, come on, Ry. Stop.’

“He kept switching directions on the sidewalk like he wanted her to leave, responding over and over, ‘Roger that!’ - whatever that was supposed to mean.”

The hostilities ceased when the couple noticed that there was a photographer trailing them.

“He grabbed her hand and stormed away,” said our snoop.

Reynolds, of “Definitely, Maybe” fame, is in town filming “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Jo was in town visiting him.

And if you believe the tabloids - and who doesn’t - there has been some trouble in lovelyland for the Tinseltown twosome. Word is, the couple is going through “a rough patch,” because Reynolds, 32, wants to tie the knot and his galpal is just 23 and very focused on her career at the mo.

“Scarlett is younger and has no desire for a husband or family just yet,” a source told London’s Daily Mail.

Scarlett Johansson is moving in with boyfriend Ryan Reynolds - and her mum is allegedly not happy about it.

The Hollywood star has been dating Reynolds for more than a year and recently moved her belongings into his Los Angeles home, the New York Daily News reports.

But Scarlett’s mum, Melanie Sloan, is still not comfortable with the age difference between Scarlett, 23, and Reynolds, 31, the paper claims.

“Rumour has it that Scarlett Johansson is moving in with beau Ryan Reynolds, much to the ire of her mom,” the Rush & Molloy column states.

“We hear the buxom blond shlepped her stuff into Reynolds’ L.A pad, but Mama Johansson thinks that at just 23, her baby girl is too young to cohabitate with the 31-year-old Reynolds.”

Actress Scarlett Johansson has been called a “Total Diva” by cast members on her new movie, ‘He’s Just Not That Into You,’ after she had a driver shuttle her a mere 100 yards onto the set, while her costar, Drew Barrymore happily walked the distance.

A source told Us Magazine: “Scarlett’s a total diva,” the insider tells Us. “Some people are cool, and others are not.”

A production source also told Us magazine, “We prefer talent use vans when filming on public streets, and Scarlett has only been professional.”

Scarlett Johansson was distracted during the filming of her new movie The Other Boleyn Girl - because she couldn’t stop staring at her male co-stars’ nether regions.

The Hollywood star said she was amazed at how big the codpieces were under their tight costumes.

“At first I was so distracted, I had never worked on a film that had used codpieces and now in the modern productions I request them,” she joked.

She then said she got the role of Anne Boleyn’s sister Mary after her co-star Natalie Portman suggested her for the part.

“I originally got the script through Natalie, she had been attached to play Anne and I heard there was a project and was asked if I’d be interested in playing her sister,” she said.

“I was a huge fan of Natalie’s, I’ve been a huge fan of hers for a long time and so I jumped at the opportunity. I read the script and it’s really rare to find a project where there is two meaty roles for women.”

Her co-star Natalie then admitted she has spent so long in England filming she has picked up some of the cockney rhyming slang. “I’ve got some more slang like ‘take a butcher’s’ and also your ‘boat race’ means face,” she said on morning show GMTV.

Hollywood beauty Scarlett Johansson compared herself to a modern-day Marilyn Monroe - but “hopefully without the tragedy”.

The Lost in Translation star spoke about her image on a TV chat show where she appeared with super blonde hair and bright red lipstick. “I think you are the equivalent of a retro modern day pin up girl - it’s almost like Marilyn Monroe,” interviewer Kelly Ripa said.

After accepting the compliment, Scarlett quipped: “Hopefully without the tragedy.”

She continued: “I like to play with my look. Of course I’ll never be that 6ft tall, 120 pounds … I’m a curvy girl, so I work with it.

“I try to embrace my femininity and encourage girls to put on a little red lipstick and all that stuff. So glamour is not lost!”

Scarlett has just come back from visiting troops in Kuwait, which she called a “life changing, amazing experience - one of the best things I’ve ever done”.

She said it was “nice to just brighten the day there” for troops she met.

Scarlett recently finished her third movie with Woody Allen, and joked that the legendary filmmaker only hires her through “pure convenience because I know what he likes to eat in the morning”.

American actresses Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson claim mastering the Queen’s English was the toughest challenge while filming their latest movie.

Portman, 26, plays Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn, and Johansson, 23, her sister, Mary, in The Other Boleyn Girl.

The pair admitted it was tough perfecting their accents, particularly while wearing corsets.

The movie is heavy on dialog, so Portman worked with a dialect coach for a month before shooting.  “That was a big challenge. One of the biggest challenges, personally,” Portman said.

“It totally takes me out of a movie when I hear British actors doing a bad American accent. It’s a scary thing. I can’t improvise with an accent at all.”

For Lost In Translation star Johansson, speaking the Queen’s English was “something you want to nail down early so it’s not something you think about when you’re working. I’ve spent a lot of time in London and having family there, that was helpful for me. It’s definitely a hurdle.”

She said the language barrier was one reason the pair, working together for the first time,  “clung to one another” during filming.

“I feel like I got so much of my energy from Scarlett,” Portman said.

“When I was like, ‘What am I doing? Where am I?’ I’d look at her and be like, ‘OK. She’s my sister.’”
