For a 25-year-old singer in the spotlight, Carrie Underwood has had her share of guy drama.

The American Idol winner opens up in Allure’s September issue about dating Dallas Cowboys player Tony Romo, Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford and a boyfriend who cheated on her in college.

“We were both small-town people doing very big things, and we relied on each other, dealing with fame,” she says of Romo. “I don’t know. The phone will ring and it’ll be him, and I’ll maybe not answer.”

On her recent split with Crawford, she explains: “We didn’t have a fight. No one cheated. It plain didn’t work.”

One of her relationships from her days at Oklahoma’s Northeastern State University could have inspired her hit “Before He Cheats.”

“I don’t want to name names, even though he probably deserves it, but he fooled around,” she says. “Oh, yeah – And lied.”

Underwood says it’s difficult to find friends she can trust – and guys who like her for the right reasons.

“You never really know why somebody wants to be around you, or if they do genuinely like you,” she says. “I wish everyone had a label on their forehead so you could automatically tell their intentions. Sometimes you just wish that no one wanted anything from you.”

Despite her first album becoming one of the best-selling country albums ever, Underwood has financial fears – and still drives the Mustang she won on Idol

“But what if I don’t earn any more next year?” she asked. “What if something awful happens? I’m not at that point where I say, ‘OK, I’ve made enough.’ I don’t know what the limit is.”

The singer maintains that she’s not competitive with her country competitors. “We work harder than the guys do, because we have to!” she insists.

“That Faith Hill thing was a joke,” she says, referring to Hill expressing shock when the Idol beat her for CMA’s Female Vocalist of the Year award. “I talked to her, and she was like, ‘Carrie, I’m sorry.’”

Underwood’s dream? “I want to have a girls-only tour and get some awesome chicks together, and have us all go out and – kick butt.”

Country music fans are probably the toughest music critics around.

Skepticism was elevated hours before Jessica Simpson’s debut country performance, opening for Sara Evans, Saturday night at Country Thunder. With only one country single released, fans doubted if the pop diva could stack up against other country music acts.

“Just because she’s dating Tony Romo it doesn’t make her country,” said Mike Rodriguez, 31, from Lake Geneva. “She doesn’t fit in with country, and I’ll have to drink a lot of beer to sit through her concert.”

Zach Schlodt, 19, of Palatine, Ill., agreed. Simpson’s heart isn’t in country music, and she is just banking on the genre’s current popularity, he said.

“She’s an embarrassment to country music,” he added.

The Texas native’s first pop single “I Wanna Love You,” debuted in 1999. Over the past several years, the songstress has attained superstardom.

Her country single was released this summer; however, her album is not due until Sept. 9.

The crowd welcomed Simpson with a mixture of boos and cheers Saturday night. She strutted onto the stage in Daisy Duke shorts, a white button-down shirt and cowboy boots as she sang a cover of Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walking.”

Her set included several cover songs, such as Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” and Shania Twain’s “Who’s Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?”

She also belted out songs featured on her upcoming album called “Do You Know,” including the single “Come On Over.”

To the disappointment of many audience members, she also sang one of her pop hits “With You.”

So the question remains: Did Simpson prove herself?

It didn’t sit well with audience members that Simpson played after a more established country singer, Kellie Pickler.

Many audience members found her attempt to crossover into country irritating and that her vocals lacked a southern sound.

“I just don’t hear the country in her; I don’t hear the twang. She’s not good enough to be here,” said Adam Matos, 21, from Arlington Heights, Ill.

One man summed her performance up in a single word.

“It’s crap,” said Ryan Sia, 28, from East Troy. “She doesn’t belong here.”

But there were a few die-hard Simpson supporters in the crowd.

“I actually like her country songs better. She has a great voice, plus, she’s adorable,” said Mary Grace, 24, from Mundelein, Ill.

Simpson seemed aware of the tension.

“I don’t know what your perception is of Jessica Simpson or what tabloid you buy, but I just want you to know that I’m just a girl from Texas; I’m just like you. I’m doing what I love and dating a boy,” Simpson said.

And it doesn’t sound like Simpson is treating country music like a momentary diversion; before exiting the stage she announced she has no plans to produce a pop album again.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens says he was joking last year when he said Tony Romo’s girlfriend Jessica Simpson was not a “fan favorite — in this locker room or in Texas Stadium.”

(Critics claimed Simpson, 28, had jinxed Romo’s career by showing up at one of his football games that he lost last year.)

“She doesn’t really know my personality. I think Tony knew I was kidding,” Owens, 34, told Usmagazine.com Tuesday at the ESPY Style Studio in L.A. “I don’t regret it because I was just having fun. I was just teasing her.”

“I talked to her about it and gave her a hard time about it,” Owens added.

But in the end, “I told her she is welcome to the stadium anytime. I told her she can come down and sit in my section,” he told Us. “I’m sure she will be back!”

The Dallas Cowboy QB kept his distance from girlfriend Jessica Simpson at the Key Club in LA the other night. “They were there for cover band Steel Panther but refused to be photographed together,” said our spy. “They walked in a few feet apart, and Jessica sat with Vivica Fox, laughing and drinking with her all night. But Jessica kept excusing herself to walk to the back, where Tony was. They’d make out against the wall; then she’d walk back up to sit in front.”

At the American Century Championship Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, where Romo played for charity, PEOPLE asked him for his top three iPod picks.

Romo named Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” (which he serenaded Simpson with during a night out recently”] ), and Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child of Mine.”

As for his final pick, the football star said with a blush and a smile: “Something by Jessica Simpson.”

Jessica Simpson isn’t avoiding her 28th birthday on Thursday – she’s already started celebrating.

The singer – joined by close friends and family – indulged in her favorite cupcake flavor, red velvet, from Crumbs bakery.

For dinner, Jessica and on-again beau Tony Romo went to Sagebrush Cantina in Calabasas, where they met up with her pregnant sister Ashlee and husband Pete Wentz.

At one point, Ashlee and Jessica got on stage to sing with The Copycats, a cover band that was playing. The band serenaded Jessica with “Happy Birthday.”

Following dinner, Jessica and Romo hit Key Club in West Hollywood to see Steel Panther (formerly known as Metal Skool).

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback even tried his hand at singing the Guns n’ Roses hit “Sweet Child O’ Mine” to Jessica and the crowd.

In January, Romo belted out Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” to the singer.

“I don’t know about wedding bells,” Jessica said last month of her relationship with Romo. “But I’m still with him, so that’s a good sign.”

Perhaps bread sticks soothe nerves?

Jessica Simpson, 27, met beau Tony Romo’s parents on June 27, when all of them had dinner at an Olive Garden in Janesville, Wisc.

Romo, 28, who grew up in nearby Burlington, was home to play in a golf tournament.

But making a reservation at the Olive Garden surprised even the restaurant’s general manager. “We thought it was a big joke,” said Doug Belfanz. “Jessica Simpson’s not going to the Olive Garden in Janesville, Wisconsin!”

Yep, actually, she did. Simpson, wearing a casual blouse and blue jeans, walked in holding hands with Romo, who wore a T-shirt and baseball cap.

Simpson had wine with her three-cheese ziti, but seemed more interested in Romo.

“She scooted up next to him during the meal,” says Belfanz. “They were acting like a couple.”

After dinner, they posed for a photo with the staff and signed autographs. Sneaking out through the kitchen, Simpson complimented the chefs on the meal.

“They were laughing,” Belfanz says. “It was just a big family being out.”

As it turns out, Jessica Simpson’s meddling father wasn’t the only factor in her recent relationship woes with Tony Romo. Although the two are now back together for “a trial thing,” a friend of the singer-turned-actress spoke to In Touch about Jessica’s jealousy issues.

“Jessica can be so insecure when she is with Tony, and it only gets worse when he is around women,” said the friend.

While the pal insists that any female competition is bound to upset Jessica, the subject of Tony’s ex-girlfriend Carrie Underwood is what really riles her.

“(Jessica) is really upset that (Tony’s) still communicating with Carrie,” the source said. In fact, the insider revealed that the Dallas Cowboy quarterback frequently contacts the country-music star via e-mail and text messages even though he knows it bothers Jess. “She had specifically asked Tony to stop,” the insider added.

And “things got worse for Jessica” when Carrie broke up with Chace Crawford back in March, according to the friend. That’s when Jessica allegedly began to fear Carrie really could win Tony back.

“Jessica has to tone down how jealous she gets over things like this,” the friend adds. “It took a toll on their relationship.”

Last week, a source told the Chicago Sun-Times that the problems between NFL quarterback Tony Romo and singer-actress Jessica Simpson were a direct result of the singer’s meddling father-manager. Now, thanks to another gabby insider, Us Weekly found out just what Papa Joe did to push Jessica’s main squeeze too far.

The first offense from the Simpson patriarch was to suggest Tony drop his agent and let Joe handle his Dallas Cowboys career and the $65.7 million contract that comes with it.

According to the Us source, Joe followed that unpopular play with an offer to publicize the quarterback’s engagement to Jessica and their eventual nuptials in the event that things ever went that far.

“If you guys have a marriage, I can (sell it) the same that I did with Ashlee,” Joe said, according to the insider.

Though Tony’s negative reaction to all that unsolicited help is said to be the reason he and Jessica are just “a trial thing” now, Joe defended his actions when Us asked him about the situation.

“It’s unfair to criticize me for what every manager does for his or her clients,” Simpson told the magazine, “And in this business, where people can quickly turn on you, who better than a parent to be working for his children?”

In its new issue, Us Weekly reports that Jessica Simpson’s controlling father Joe has brought her relationship with Tony Romo to the brink and was the main source behind their split in May.

A source tells Us Joe asked Romo, 28, to drop his agent so he could take over his NFL career and $67.5 million contract.

He even offered to broker a deal to sell his engagement and wedding to a magazine should Romo and Jessica, 27, get engaged. “‘If you guys have a marriage, I can do the same [sell it] that I did with Ashlee,’” a source quotes Joe as saying.

As tension grew, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback gave Jessica an ultimatum: Tell dad to back off!

When asked for comment by Us, Joe defended himself, telling Us, “It’s unfair to criticize me for what every manager does for his or her clients. And in this business, where people can quickly turn on you, who better than a parent to be working for his children?”

Romo was also turned off by Jessica’s partying, another source adds. “Tony goes out and he will drink socially, but he said Jess takes it to an extreme,” the pal tells Us.

For now, a source says Romo and Simpson are back on, in “a talking stage.”

It appears Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo have smoothed out their rough patch.

After a brief split, the pair reunited in Dallas for Memorial Day weekend.

Simpson and Romo shared a corner booth at N9Ne steakhouse on Saturday night according to Alan Peppard of the Dallas Morning News - the columnist who was first to report on the couple’s split.

According to Peppard the pair noshed on steak (for him) and a burger (for her) - and stopped to say hello to another diner with a baby girl on their way out.

On Sunday, Simpson and Romo took in brunch at Sneaky Pete’s in Lewisville, Texas, PerezHilton reported.

Simpson sported a Dallas Cowboys cap while leaving Cabo San Lucas on Thursday.

The singer had been vacationing with her parents, (sans Romo) since her sister tied the knot on May 17.

Jessica Simpson was seen having lunch with Tony Romo in L.A. Friday at Katsuya after three weeks of not being photographed together and widespread reports the couple had split.

Columnist Alan Peppard of The Dallas Morning News reported Simpson and Romo were dunzo Thursday.

Despite rep denials, “two people close to Tony and Jess have told me that the glam couple is splitsville, kaput, over, put a fork in it,” Peppard wrote.

Another report in the Chicago Sun-Times said Romo grew tired of Simpson’s increasingly meddlesome father Joe.

Usmagazine.com confirmed that Simpson and Romo had called it quits Friday.

“Tony did dump Jessica,” a source close to the Dallas Cowboys quarterback told Usmagazine.com. “Of course, she’s upset!”

So are they really over?

“He’s broken up with her before, but I don’t know if they’ll get back together this time,” a source tells Us.

Romo could be in town for Ashlee Simpson’s wedding to Pete Wentz on Saturday.

“Joe has called Tony and asked him to come to show support for the wedding,” a source told Us.

The Internet has been running rampant this week with reports that Jessica Simpson has split from Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

While reps for the Texan twosome have been busy denying the split, a source close to the Romo camp told Pop Tarts that their relationship has hit a “rough patch” but might not be totally over just yet.

After all, he apparently already had plans to get down on one knee for the songstress, and just recently she referred to him as her “future husband” in Glamour magazine.

According to our inside source, Tony was organizing an “intimate dinner for friends and family” to take place in Texas within the next few weeks in anticipation of announcing his engagement to the eldest Simpson sister.

“Every couple has their problems; we’re hoping that they’ll have a break and work it all out,” the source said. Calls to Simpson’s rep were not returned.

So while Romo’s initial matrimonial plans seem to have been put on the back-burner, Jess and Tony are apparently still “talking.”

So what’s the problem?

Romo, 28, reportedly still has a roommate and loves his freedom, while Jess, 27, already has been married and divorced and has made it clear she wants to be a mom soon.

“Jessica has made no secret of the fact she wants to get married, and with all the Ashlee wedding talk and Jess’ dad’s involvement, Tony was obviously feeling it,” another source said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he just couldn’t go through with the proposal and that’s what’s caused the break.”

On that note, Pop Tarts has been told that rumors regarding Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s wedding are true and they are set to tie the knot just outside L.A. this weekend. At this stage we’re told that Tony won’t be attending.

Update: Jessica turned up at Hennessy’s Jazz Night at Teddy’s in L.A. on Thursday with three gal pals, donning a skimpy black dress, Pop Tarts has been told.

Simpson apparently “shook her booty all night long” with her eye on the door, perhaps hoping that her ex John Mayer (who often stops by for an impromptu performance) would show up.

According to our spy, her soon-to-be brother-in-law Wentz also stopped by and gave her a particularly lengthy hug (soothing some heartache?), and she stumbled out the door “somewhat intoxicated” in the wee hours with a friend holding her up.

New photos have surfaced on PerezHilton.com that show her beau Tony Romo getting cozy with a tan blonde at Chicago club Manor over the weekend.

Perez reports that “five to six girls from Hooters” — including the woman he’s seen whispering into the ear of — partied with Romo, 28, and his pals.

Us Weekly reports in its latest issue, on newsstands now, that Romo announced to his friends that night: “We are broken up.”

The night Romo partied in Chicago, the new issue Us Weekly reports that Simpson was drinking away her sorrows at the same time ex John Mayer’s public debut with Jennifer Aniston.

As Mayer and Aniston hit her Marley & Me wrap party in Miami, the 27-year-old Simpson went on a four-hour drinking spree with pals at L.A.’s Mexicali Cocina Cantina.

Simpson was so out of it that she had to ditch her Range Rover in the parking lot and call her mom for a ride home.

A rep for Simpson told Us, the singer is “very happy with Tony…they are both happy together.”

Tony Romo had a bachelor-style hard partying weekend in the Windy City these past couple of days and now we know why. We exclusively have learned that Romo and girlfriend Jessica Simpson have broken up!

Romo partied with several of his college buddies from his alma mater Eastern Illinois over the weekend and he told them on Saturday night that him and Simpson were on the outs.

“They’re broken up,” according to a pal of the Dallas Cowboys quarterback. “He told us they broke up and that was that. We’re guys so we didn’t talk about it much.”

A broken heart didn’t stop this professional athlete from partying like a rock star! Romo began his night on Saturday at new Chicago hotspot Uncle Fatty’s Rum Resort in the Lakeview area of the Windy City.

“[Tony was] having a blast playing Pop-A-Shot mini golf and bags,” according to a source. “He was with some football college buddies and drinking Grey Goose and Diet Cokes.”

After spending hours at the reggae bar, Romo and his crew headed to Manor nightclub. Romo and his boys sat in a huge VIP table in a roped off VIP section and welcomed many girls to hang out with them.

“He was surrounded by girls,” according to an eyewitness. “We had to restrain some who forcibly tried to make their way to his table.”

Apparently, the girls at da club weren’t enough for Romo and his friends. They sent the nightclub’s bus to pick up more girls from the Hard Rock Hotel where Romo and his friends were crashing.

Romo’s night entailed a bevy of beauties, including one blonde in particular he spent a lot of time talking to, and an “impressive” amount of alcohol.

“He zeroed in on one blonde all night,” a source said. “That blonde wasn’t Jessica Simpson.”

Romo enjoyed vodka drinks from one of the many bottles of Grey Goose at his tables and him and his friends took back shots of tequila and Bacardi O-Bombs all night.

On Sunday, a hung over looking Romo attended the Cubs-Diamondbacks game at Wrigley Field where he threw out the first pitch. Romo hid in a huge blue Cubs sweatshirt and didn’t talk much.

A fan asked Romo at the game if he was excited for Ashlee Simpson’s wedding to Pete Wentz and if he has gotten her a baby gift. He said: “I don’t know anything about that.”

All in all, Romo was super sweet to all his fans in Chicago over the weekend despite his heartache. He politely signed autographs and took photos with fans all weekend long. We hope that this is only a temporary split, because we really like them together!

Us Weekly reports in its latest issue (on newsstands now) that Jessica Simpson is calling Tony Romo her “future husband.”

Now, she tells the June issue of Glamour, that she is “in love” with the Dallas Cowboys quarterback, whom she says helped her gain more confidence.

She says she even wrote him a song, “Back in My Old Boots.”

“He reintroduced me to myself,” Simpson says. “I thought that I had to be deeper, more profound and more artsy. You change with the guys you date.

“Tony taught me that because he loves me [as me]. He made me feel comfortable [being myself] again,” she adds.

She dismisses critics who claimed she jinxed his career by showing up at one of his football games that he lost last year.

“Everybody takes everything out on me! But that was ludicrous,” she says. “I don’t understand why they think that I would be a distraction to Tony. Do they really think he can see way far up in that box? No.”

She says Romo first caught her eye while she was going through her divorce with Nick Lachey.

“My family and I were watching a Cowboys game … and — Tony would die if I told you this — but [on TV there was a story] about him,” she says. “They said his celebrity dream crush was Jessica Simpson.

“My family was like, ‘Did you just hear that?’” she goes on. “His picture came up, and I’m like, ‘He’s really cute.’ Then I heard [that I was his crush], and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh!’”

They met a year-and-a-half later after a pal introduced Tony to her dad, Joe Simpson.

After Tony spotted Jessica and Joe at the Country Music Awards last November, “Tony e-mailed my dad, ‘Cute date,’” Simpson reveals.

“My dad was like, ‘Look what Tony said,’ Simpson says. “I said, ‘Give him my e-mail address. We’ll see if he’s good with words.’ Then he e-mailed me, and we flirted over e-mail and on the phone.”

She says they got to know each other “by talking, which I think is the best way.”

On their first date, Simpson admits, “I had butterflies that you would not imagine. I wanted to puke in the cup holder … It took me forever to put together an outfit!”

He tried to kiss her on their first date. “I was taken aback….

“The fact that this guy, on our first date, in the first 10 minutes of dinner, wanted to lean over the table and say, ‘This is my girl, and I want to kiss her’ — our first kiss in front of everybody — was awesome,” she says.

She also hints about her split with Nick Lachey, saying, “There’s too much competition [being with a musician]. There’s too much know-it-all pop star.”

Jessica Simpson serenaded her beau Tony Romo at his birthday bash on Saturday night in Dallas – and fed him some cake.

The affectionate pair showed up at Suite, an exclusive nightspot, to celebrate Romo’s 28th birthday a few days early. (His actual birthday is Monday, April 21.)

The get-together included a blue, star-shaped, No. 9 birthday cake – a nod to the Dallas Cowboys star’s jersey number – champagne, and lots of dancing at the crowded club.

At one point in the evening, Simpson got on the mic and sang “Happy Birthday” to her beau – then they started feeding each other cake. (See more pics from the feeding here.)

“She licked cake from his face as everyone cheered them on. It was quite a spectacle,” says one club insider. “But they looked really happy together. Jessica had blue icing all over her hands and mouth and Tony was laughing.”

On Sunday, the inseparable pair were spotted at Bent Tree Country Club where Romo teed off to play 18 rounds. Simpson watched from the sidelines, riding along in a golf cart.
