NOT many people could break the nose of tough-guy star Tony Sirico and get away with it, but legendary New York City detective Joe Coffey did just that in 1971. So it was a shock when the actor, who played Paulie Walnuts on “The Sopranos,” recently confronted the now-retired cop and hugged him. “I want to thank you for what you did. You saved my life!” Sirico, 65, told the lawman after spotting him at the Heartshare charity gala at the Marriott Marquis. Sirico, once a young thug with the Colombo crime family, was grabbed by Coffey at Belmont racetrack for carrying a loaded gun in 1971. Coffey used the weapon to smash his nose and break it. As Sirico did 20 months in prison, he decided to quit crime and try acting. The visible bump from the nose injury became his trademark in flicks like “GoodFellas.” Coffey, who helped crack the Son of Sam case, told The Post’s Murray Weiss, “Tony has a great memory. I feel like a school teacher, where one of my students made good.” James Gandolfini, who was at the event, was also impressed. The man who played Tony Soprano approached Coffey, uttering, “I hear you know Tony!”
