Diaz undergoes surgery to relieve swelling on brain
Source: www.celebritymound.com

Welterweight Oscar Diaz, who collapsed in his corner after the 10th round of a TKO loss to Delvin Rodriguez on Wednesday night, remained in critical condition Thursday after undergoing surgery overnight at San Antonio’s University Medical Center to relieve swelling on his brain.
“Oscar came through surgery well,” Ron Katz of Rodriguez promoter Star Boxing told ESPN.com after talking to Donna Duva Brooks of Hall of Fame Promotions, Diaz’s promoter, who was at the hospital.
“They had to remove the left side of his cranium in order to help the swelling go down, which apparently was very bad,” Katz said. “He had a subdural hematoma [bleeding on the brain], which was taken care of. During surgery, he apparently showed movement in his arms and his brain pressure was very good, according to the doctor.”
Diaz was under heavy sedation following the operation, but was not in a medically induced coma, Katz said.
Fighting in front of his hometown fans at San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium, Diaz appeared to be trailing badly in the fight. His right eye was swollen almost completely shut in the main event of the ESPN2-televised “Wednesday Night Fights.”
Just before the 11th round began, Diaz, who was standing in his corner receiving instructions from trainer Tommy Brooks, buckled and passed out. Medical personnel came to his side immediately and within a few minutes he was on a stretcher and being taken to a waiting ambulance.
“When he left the ring, he was completely stationary and he didn’t look good,” Star Boxing chief Joe DeGuardia said. “They couldn’t get him to respond. They cleared a path right away and took him to the hospital.”
It had been a grueling, physical fight between Diaz (26-3, 12 KOs), 25, and Rodriguez (23-2-1, 14 KOs), 28, of Danbury, Conn. That kind of fight was nothing new for Diaz, a brawler who has been in several hard fights, none more difficult than an 11th-round TKO loss to Golden Johnson on Nov. 10, 2006.
Diaz took enormous punishment in that fight before it was stopped. He returned eight months later to face Juan Manuel Buendia, but the fight ended in a first-round no contest because of an accidental head butt.
Diaz then won a unanimous eight-round decision against Roberto Valenzuela in May to set up the fight with Rodriguez for the vacant regional USBA 147-pound title.

Natalie Cole Diagnosed with Hepatitis C
Source: www.celebritymound.com

Natalie Cole has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C, her rep confirms to PEOPLE.
The Grammy Award winning singer discovered she had the disease during a routine visit to the doctor, but is responding well to treatment.
“Natalie has had a terrific response to her medication and is now virus negative,” Dr. Graham Woolf, Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at U.C.L.A./Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said in a statement. “This gives her an increased chance of cure.” Still, Cole has suffered side effects from the anti-viral medicine, including fatigue, muscle aches and dehydration, but, “she is recovering from these,” Woolf said.
Doctors believe that Cole’s illness is likely the result of drug usage decades ago, which she documented her 2000 autobiography, Angel On My Shoulder.
“I’ve been so fortunate to have learned so much from my past experiences,” said Cole. “I am embraced by the love and support of my family and friends; I am committed to my belief in myself and in my abiding faith to meet this challenge with a heartfelt optimism and determination. This is how I intend to deal with this current challenge in my life.”
Cole is expected to release her latest album, Still Unforgettable on Sept. 9.

Menudo Member Kicked Off Delta Flight
Source: www.celebritymound.com

Menudo band member Carlos Olivero was escorted by security off a Delta flight in Atlanta after refusing to put away his iPod, PEOPLE has learned.
The 18-year-old heartthrob, his mother, and his bandmates were on flight 4483 on July 4 as it prepared to leave for Knoxville, Tenn., when Olivero was told to leave the plane, a source says.
“A flight attendant accused Carlos of having an attitude after she asked him to turn off his iPod in preparation for takeoff,” the source says. “Carlos complied and turned his iPod off, but the flight attendant then demanded he stow it. Carlos showed her again that the iPod was turned off, but he refused to stow it.”
A Delta airlines security team was summoned and escorted him and his mother off the plane, the source says. His bandmates, the Menudo tech crew and management also left the plane, the source says.
The five-member group boarded another flight, but without their tech crew since there weren’t enough seats. After they arrived in Knoxville for the Star 102.1 FM Festival, they performed songs from their upcoming album out Sept. 30, including the hit “Lost,” in front of 75,000 fans, but the group improvised.
“When they finally took to the stage in Knoxville, they realized some of their borrowed tech equipment didn’t operate properly, so they ended up performing a cappella midway through the set.”
A rep for Menudo tells PEOPLE, “We can confirm there was an incident on the Delta flight. The members of Menudo are on a plane nearly every day flying from one concert appearance to another so this took us totally by surprise. We’ve never had a problem before.”
A Delta rep wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Award-winning South African Drama Showcased at Outfest and Set for U. S. Theatrical Release This Fall
here! Films, the theatrical distribution and worldwide sales division of here! Networks, is pleased to announce that it has acquired all North American distribution rights to “The World Unseen,” a new film from director Shamim Sarif, from sales agency Enlightenment Films. The film is an official selection of Outfest 2008: The 26th Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and will be released theatrically this fall by Regent Releasing, here! Films’ sister company.
Written, directed, financed and produced entirely by women, the motion picture is an Enlightenment Productions film, in association with DO Productions. Producer Hanan Kattan and co-producer Brigid Olen have teamed up on this project along with associate producer Daisy Allsop. Lisa Tchenguiz-Imerman and Katherine Priestley serve as Executive Producers. “The World Unseen” is the second feature directed by award-winning novelist Shamim Sarif, who also served as the screenwriter on the film, adapting her own book of the same name.
“The World Unseen” is a very special find for us,” said Mark Reinhart, West Coast General Manager and EVP, Distribution and Acquisitions. “This kind of deeply felt drama represents what the here! brand stands for, in supporting stories of, by and for women, and we’re thrilled to be involved in bringing Shamim Sarif’s accomplished film to U.S. audiences this fall.”
Set in 1950’s South Africa at the beginning of apartheid, free-spirited Amina (Sheetal Sheth) has broken all the rules of her own conventional Indian community and the new apartheid-led government, by running a café with Jacob, her black business partner. When she meets Miriam (Lisa Ray), a young wife and mother, their unexpected attraction pushes Miriam to question the rules that bind her to a traditional role. As Amina helps Miriam’s sister-in-law to hide from the police, a chain of events is set in motion that changes both women forever.
Hanan Kattan, the film’s producer, says: “We are thrilled to be working with Regent on building a strong theatrical presence in the U.S. for ‘The World Unseen.’ The film has had such an overwhelmingly positive response from festival audiences and Regent has a passion for the movie that will ensure it is marketed with the care it deserves.”

The early apartheid setting “forms the backdrop for a story of very universal human emotions,” says producer Hanan Kattan. “From overcoming oppression to finding personal freedom, from the hardships of a loveless marriage to the hesitant joy of an unexpected love affair, ‘The World Unseen’ transports the viewer to a vibrant, colourful world that is universal in its themes.”
The international cast is headed up by award-winning Canadian actress Lisa Ray. Her performance in the Academy Award-nominated film “Water” earned her the Best Actress Award from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle. Other superb cast members include Sheetal Sheth (”Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World”), Parvin Dabas (”Monsoon Wedding”), Bernard White (”The Matrix”) and Nandana Sen (”Black”). Family Ties’ star Brian Bonsall accused of violating probation
Source: www.celebritymound.com

A former child actor charged and sentenced last year for assaulting his girlfriend is accused of violating the conditions of his probation by failing to pay for domestic-violence classes, missing daily breathalyzer tests and submitting a positive breath test.
Brian Bonsall, 26, of Boulder — who played Michael J. Fox’s kid brother, Andy Keaton, on the television show “Family Ties” in the 1980s — also “has not been able to secure full-time employment,” according to a probation-violation complaint filed in Boulder District Court.
Bonsall is due to appear in court Wednesday morning on the alleged violations.
As punishment, a probation officer has recommended Bonsall be sentenced to a 60-day term of work release — which allows inmates to leave the Boulder County Jail for work every day and requires them to return at night.
The officer also suggests Bonsall be required to adhere to a “strict sobriety schedule,” attend four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week and pay for his violence classes.
Bonsall, who also starred in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” in the 1990s and told the court in September that he’s now in a rock band, was arrested in March 2007 after police said he poured alcohol in his girlfriend’s face as she slept.
He’s also accused of putting his arm around her neck and throwing her into a bed when she tried to leave their apartment on Balsam Avenue in central Boulder.
In September, when Bonsall pleaded guilty to third-degree assault and was sentenced two years probation, he told the court he had been clean for five months and was in rehab. A judge ruled that he and his girlfriend could continue living together.
Bonsall, who graduated from Boulder High School in 2000, has had several alcohol-related run-ins with the law. He’s been ticketed for underage drinking in Broomfield and Boulder counties, and he was stopped by police in 2001 and 2004 on suspicion of drunk driving.

Death Row Records auctioned for $24 million
Source: www.celebritymound.com

Death Row Records, the hip-hop label that released seminal gangster rap albums by Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, has been auctioned for $24 million.
The New York-based Global Music Group Inc. said in a statement to The Associated Press on Monday that on June 24 it purchased Death Row, including its enviable back catalog and current artist contracts.
The purchase concluded the roller-coaster saga of one of hip-hop’s most famous labels. Under owner Marion “Suge” Knight, Death Row sold tens of millions of albums in the heyday of early `90s rap - its artists often flashing the spoils of the high life in music videos - before collapsing in debt and mismanagement.
A former couple, Lydia and Michael Harris, claimed they helped found the label, and won a judgment of $107 million, which they tried to collect in 2006. Unable to pay, Death Row and Knight filed for bankruptcy in April 2006, claiming debts of more than $100 million.
In 2006, a federal judge ordered a bankruptcy trustee takeover of Death Row Records, saying the label had undergone gross mismanagement. Knight’s decision to file for bankruptcy protection staved off a move by the court to appoint someone to take control of the record label and his assets.
Global Music Group, an independent label, takes ownership of albums including Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic,” Shakur’s “All Eyez on Me” and Snoop Dogg’s “Doggystyle.”
Other assets are believed to include unreleased material from Shakur that could result in another posthumous release from the rapper.
Knight has a history of legal problems. He was convicted of assault in 1992 and placed on probation, then jailed for five years in 1996 for violating that probation.
He was returned to jail in 2003 for again violating parole, this time by punching a parking attendant at a Hollywood nightclub. He was released the next year.
In 2006 under questioning from his creditors, Knight denied having money tucked away in foreign countries. His bank account then contained just $11.
Global Music CEO Anthony Davi, Jr., said the label planned to get “the best economic results of the catalog and provide long term stewardship of the artists’ work.” The company plans to later announce details of its plans for Death Row.
Miss USA offers humor and philosophy about fall
Source: www.celebritymound.com
Miss USA has learned a simple lesson from her humiliating tumble during the Miss Universe pageant - the second year in a row the American contestant has taken a spill.
“I think I’m going to have to take some walking classes,” Crystle Stewart told The Associated Press during a telephone interview Monday, just hours after her mishap was broadcast live across the globe.
“I would never have thought in a million years that I would fall down at the Miss Universe pageant - right after Miss USA fell last year,” Stewart said. “I always wondered: My God, if that happened to me, what would I do?”
Stewart is taking the episode with equal parts humor and philosophy, determined to move on.
“Things happen,” said Stewart, 26. “I”m perfectly fine. I’m going to move back to New York and get on with my life.”
Stewart’s fall came as she walked on stage for the evening gown competition.
“My dress has beautiful beads on the bottom of it, and I stepped on my gown and they made me slip. It was like I was on Rollerblades. There was no conspiracy or anything. Nobody left marbles on the floor. It was just me.”
Miss Venezuela, who won the contest, will now become Stewart’s roommate in New York, where Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA share an apartment provided by the company that owns all three pageants.
Stewart and the other contestants attended a coronation party for the new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, on Monday night in Nha Trang, where the pageant was held.
Stewart is a motivational speaker and has developed a character education program which she teaches in a New York City school. She plans to turn her mishap into a lesson.
“I’ll be talking to my students about it when I get back,” she said. “Sometimes you fall in life, not just in the pageant but financially or emotionally. It’s not about the fall but how you pick yourself up.”
After she fell down, Stewart stood up, gave herself a round of applause, and kept on walking.
During the 2007 Miss Universe contest in Mexico City, Miss USA Rachel Smith also tumbled during the evening gown competition and became an unintended star on YouTube, where the video was shown over and over again.
Now Stewart has become an Internet sensation, drawing thousands of hits on YouTube and lighting up the conversation in Internet chatrooms.
Stewart is determined not to let the ridicule bring her down.
“I know I’ll get through it and that there are bigger and better things to come,” she said.
‘PROJECT RUNWAY’ PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, JULY 16 ON BRAVO
Source: www.celebritymound.com
Bravo’s highly-anticipated fifth season of the Peabody Award-winning and seven-time Emmy-nominated creative competition series “Project Runway” returns Wednesday, July 16 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. It’s time to introduce the designers who will strut their work in front of host supermodel Heidi Klum and judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia with high hopes of avoiding the dreaded “auf Wiedersehen.” In what is sure to be the most talked-about season yet, some of the biggest names in movies, fashion, sports and music including Diane Von Furstenberg, Sandra Bernhard, Apolo Ohno, Brooke Shields, LL Cool J, RuPaul, Rachel Zoe, Cynthia Rowley and Francisco Costa will take to the panel as guest judges for season five of “Runway.”
“I feel as though we set the bar higher every season,” said Klum. “We’ve got some truly talented, innovative and deeply creative designers this year, and I think it’s fair to say, the most diverse – everyone from a rocker chick who mostly works with leather to a more bohemian, surfer boy –and everything in between.”
“Season after season the designers have amazed us,” said Tim Gunn, mentor to the designers. “They have different DNA, different chemistry within each other and different views – their creative aptitude is right on par – but how to characterize them? That’s up to the audience!”
The 16 “Project Runway” contestants will be whittled down to the finalists who will show their own line in front of an audience of fashion industry movers and shakers at New York Fashion Week. As part of the winner’s prize package, an editorial feature on the winning designer will run in an issue of ELLE Magazine, the winner will walk away with a cash prize of $100,000 in seed money from TRESemmé professional hair care to start their own line and will have the opportunity to sell a fashion line on Bluefly.com. Saturn will award the winning designer a brand new 2009 Saturn VUE Hybrid.

“Mamma Mia” Actors Stand Up Gay Fest
Source: www.celebritymound.com

“MAMMA Mia!” actress Amanda Seyfried and her screen “fiancé,” Dominic Cooper, disappointed gay activists in LA who were expecting their participation in Outfest, a film festival for the homosexual and transgender sets. The actors were expected to walk the red carpet, pose for pictures and do interviews before introducing the movie musical, which features Meryl Streep singing ABBA tunes. But at the last minute, Outfest’s p.r. man, Carl Larsen, received an e-mail: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the red-carpet arrivals . . . have been canceled.” Larsen said, “I was taken by surprise. There was no explanation.” Another observer fumed, “Outrageous! How can [Seyfried] diss the gays like that? This is our movie!” A rep for Universal said, “This was never a red-carpet event. She volunteered to come and introduce the movie and did a great job. There was never a red carpet for her to walk.”

Looking to reopen Robert F. Kennedy murder, 40 years later
Source: www.celebritymound.com

The 40th anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy’s assassination has spurred a movement to reopen the murder case. But, so far, his heirs are reluctant to join the crusade.
As much as he suspects that his uncle, President John F. Kennedy, may have been the victim of a conspiracy, Bobby Kennedy Jr. tells us, “I’ve never seen particularly compelling evidence [that my father was].”
Several respected journalists and forensic scientists are hoping RFK’s clan will consider new findings suggesting convicted killer Sirhan Sirhan, now 64, did not act alone.
Shane O’Sullivan, author of the just-published “Who Killed Bobby?”, notes that the “autopsy concluded all three shots were fired at an upward angle from an inch behind Kennedy, but witnesses placed the muzzle of Sirhan’s gun a foot and a half to five feet in front of the senator.”
An analysis of a recently discovered audio recording of the chaos in that kitchen at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles found that 13 shots were fired — eight from Sirhan’s spot in front of Kennedy, five from behind. Three shots from behind hit Kennedy; their audio fingerprints match those of the .22 revolver owned by Eugene Cesar, a security guard who was standing behind Kennedy. Cesar has denied shooting the New York senator.
Paul Schrade, RFK’s labor adviser on the campaign, also took a bullet in the head that day. Schrade has long said the LAPD bungled the investigation. “What’s more important now,” he tells us, “is that the LAPD couldn’t have done the testing we have because the technology didn’t exist then.”
“I’m convinced we can make the case,” adds Schrade, who is putting together a legal team to challenge the verdict.
Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for L.A. District Attorney Steve Cooley, didn’t know if prosecutors were aware of recent findings, but told us: “We believe Sirhan’s conviction is valid and supported by the evidence presented to a jury at trial.”
Among those calling for a new probe before remaining witnesses die is David Talbot, whose book, “Brothers,” reveals how RFK privately tried to unravel the mysteries behind JFK’s murder.”
“I do hope that this generation [of Kennedys] will finally do something to open up the case again,” says Talbot.
Several members of the clan we contacted declined to comment. “They like to focus on RFK’s legacy,” says a family friend. “The media fascination with this subject pains them.”
Schrade, who has stayed in touch with the family, says, “I understand how difficult it is for them. We don’t talk about the conspiracy. That doesn’t mean that they won’t at some point.”

They don’t make superhero franchises much darker than this
Source: www.celebritymound.com

New York Magazine Says: “The Dark Knight is noisy, jumbled, and sadistic…”
Here are some quotes from the review:
“…the novelty wears off and the lack of imagination, visual and otherwise, turns into a drag. The Dark Knight is noisy, jumbled, and sadistic. Even its most wondrous vision—Batman’s plunges from skyscrapers, bat-wings snapping open as he glides through the night like a human kite—can’t keep the movie airborne. There’s an anvil attached to that cape.
“On paper, the morality play is intriguing, but a lot of the dialogue should have stayed on paper (I can imagine a study guide: “The Joker tells Batman he can’t fight chaos because he has too many ‘rules.’ Do those rules ultimately help or hinder Batman in his quest for justice?”). Nolan is grappling with the Big Themes of vigilantism (especially urban vigilantism…. But the psychological twists in The Dark Knight—especially the transformation of Dent into “Two-Face”—are baffling as drama. They play as if they’d been penned by Oxford philosophy majors trying to tone up a piece of American pop—to turn it into an uncivil Shavian dialogue, Don Juan in Hell with mutilations and truck crashes.
“Oh, the verbiage probably wouldn’t matter if those truck crashes were any fun, but the tumult is spectacularly incoherent. Nolan appears to have no clue how to stage or shoot action. He got away with the chopped-up fights in Batman Begins because his hero was a barely glimpsed ninja, coming at villains from all angles in stroboscopic flashes. There are more variables here, which means more opportunities to say “What the f— just happened?”…
“The Dark Knight is all fits and starts—fitfully suspenseful, fitfully scary, one jerky episode after another with jolts of brutality to keep you revved up. When Burton’s Batman came out, some prominent critics griped that the film was too violent for kids. Wait’ll they get a load of this…
“How is Heath Ledger? My heart went out to him. He’s working so very hard to fill the void, to be doing something every second. It’s rave and rage and purge acting…. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, but in truth, I found the performance painful to watch. Scarier than what the Joker does to anyone onscreen is what Ledger must have been doing to himself—trying to find the center of a character without a dream of one.”

Lennon ‘Peace’ lyrics sell at auction for $833,654
Source: www.celebritymound.com

Christie’s auction house has sold John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “Give Peace a Chance” for $833,654.
The lyrics were written during Lennon’s 1969 Bed-in protest for peace at the Queens Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.
Christie’s spokeswoman Zoe Schoon said Lennon gave the sheet to 16-year-old Gail Renard during the eight-day Bed-in.

PLAYBOY’S “GIRLS NEXT DOOR”
DISH SOME DIRT AND SAY “WE LIKE
TO DO THINGS TOGETHER” ON THE HEYMAN HUSTLE!

2 out of 3 certainly ain’t bad!
Not when you’re interviewing 2 out of 3 of Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends. “The Girls Next Door” Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt were the guests on this week’s edition of NewsCorp’s flagships broadband television program, THE HEYMAN HUSTLE. The buxom blonde bombshells were in New York City to be judges as “Playboy” conducted an open casting call in hopes of finding the 55th Anniversary Playmate.
The girls discuss the fact they like to “do things together,” what “slip n slide” at the Playboy Mansion is really like, and answer Paul’s constant questioning about whether or not they hate 22 year old live-in girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson!

Holly and Bridget are far more open than you’re used to seeing them on “THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR,” including a discussion about former “#1 Hef Girl” Barbi Benton STILL being in Hef’s life!
And wait ’til you hear Holly’s discussion with Paul about why “three” is the magic number, and how it always leaves the door open for more friends to join the girls with Hef!
It’s a wild, scandalous ride this week as Holly and Bridget turn up the heat on the Hustle. You can see the entire episode here:
