Beastie Boy Adam Yauch Criticizes Nestle In New Film

Source: www.celebritymound.com

BEASTIE Boy Adam Yauch is going to fight for his right to criticize Nestlé as an irresponsible, environmental monster - and the Swiss-based food giant is furious.

Last weekend, a top female rep for Nestlé pitched a fit at the Nantucket Film Festival, which Nestlé co-sponsored, during a screening of “Flow” - a documentary bashing Nestlé Waters as harming the environment.

The flick, distributed by Brooklyn-born Yauch (best known as Beasties rapper MCA) and his Oscilloscope Pictures, probes growing privatization of the world’s dwindling fresh-water supply. It blames the crisis on Nestlé along with Pepsi and Coca-Cola. “It takes a good look at Nestlé pumping communities around the United States and how they pull water out in order to bottle it and sell it. It depletes the water for farms and irrigation,” said one insider.

When Nestlé was mentioned in the movie, the shocked company rep jumped to her feet, spun on one heel and stamped out in full view of the producers.

“She stormed out about an hour in when the film named Nestlé,” said one attendee. “The company obviously had no idea this content was in the movie. She told an audience member, ‘That was one-sided,’ on her way out and didn’t come back for the Q&A session afterwards.”

But Yauch - known for his activism, including helping the Free Tibet movement - makes no apologies. He told Page Six the problem is that Nestlé is “promoting bottled water in general. It’s the bottles themselves, the amount of pollution they create and then disposing of them are problems.

“They put pretty pictures of springs and forests on the bottles, but in this movie they’re getting called out. I think it’s great. They lock down water as a commodity they can buy and sell. It’s terrifying.”

The movie, directed by Irena Salina, hits New York screens this September. A rep for Nestlé declined comment.

Judge Judy Needs To Pay Her Taxes

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Snooty residents of Greenwich, Conn., are trying to make trouble for “Judge Judy” Sheindlin. The tony town’s tax office launched a probe after a homeowner complained the famed TV jurist wasn’t paying thousands in local taxes on a new convertible she bought from Bentley of Greenwich by keeping its registration in Florida. But tax appraiser Ali Karimi told us Sheindlin is innocent and owes no tax because she’s in Greenwich only part of the year - well under the six-month cutoff. Still, the harassment left a bad taste in the mouth of Sheindlin, who’s wed to “Judge Jerry” Sheindlin. She told Page Six: “Jerry and I are residents of Naples, Florida, and spend our summers in Connecticut to be close to our children and grandchildren. While in Connecticut, we are involved in our community. It’s too bad that some folks have nothing better to do than to try to make trouble when there is none.”

Carlin’s `7 words you can’t say on TV’: Overheard?

Source: www.celebritymound.com

More than 30 years after George Carlin pronounced “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television,” some of those words have lost their sting.

Some of those words still aren’t welcome on the public airwaves (or, for that matter, in print) and they are still being debated in the courts.

But you can hear those words voiced in everyday discourse more than ever.

Carlin, who died Sunday at age 71, observed in his routine: “We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. Then we assign a word to a thought and we’re stuck with that word for that thought - so be careful with words.”

Good advice.

Carlin’s seven words, he would caution ironically, “are the ones that’ll infect your soul, curve your spine, and keep the country from winning the war.”

Or course, times - and wars - have changed. At least one of Carlin’s words (a rude term for urine) wouldn’t raise an eyebrow on much of broadcast TV now.

Meanwhile, none of them is alien to premium cable. For many viewers, hearing those Words You Can’t Say On Television being said on television helps make pay cable worth paying for.

Those words were heard on television in 1977, on Carlin’s first HBO comedy special.

They fall into predictable categories: bodily waste; sexual acts (both socially acceptable and frowned upon); and female body parts.

“When he used those words he wasn’t just trying to shock,” said Richard Zoglin, who wrote about Carlin in his recent book, “Comedy at the Edge: How Standup in the 1970s Changed America.”

“He was trying to make a statement that’s familiar today, but wasn’t so familiar back then: ‘Why do we have this irrational fear of words?’”

Of this Magnificent Seven, only one, which refers to the female anatomy, retains the power to jolt nearly anyone within earshot. On an HBO sitcom a couple of years ago, the angry husband used this word to insult his wife. It nearly wrecked their marriage. More tellingly, the studio audience emitted an audible gasp.

Premium cable, and even basic cable, have far more freedom with content than broadcast programming, which is carried on public airwaves by stations licensed by the Federal Communications Commission.

For broadcast, The Words are actually words the FCC says can’t be heard before 10 p.m. - when the “safe harbor” for young viewers applies. But exactly what those words are, and under what circumstances they may be permissible, is currently unclear.

“The networks are being careful, because even in this kind of flux, you don’t want to push too far,” said T. Barton Carter, Boston University professor of communications and law. “Vagueness and inconsistencies in regulation can have a chilling effect on broadcasters.”

The picture is further muddied by the fact that 80 to 90 percent of viewers get all their programming (from broadcast stations as well as cable networks) through their cable or satellite subscription, Carter added. Different indecency standards apply to channels whose difference is often undetectable to the audience.

The uncertain regulatory climate led to PBS distributing two versions of the Ken Burns documentary series “The War” last fall. Stations could choose the original version, or opt for a sanitized version of World War II, one that was free of any Words You’d Be Safer Not Saying On Television.

The FCC changed its policy on indecency following a January 2003 broadcast of the Golden Globes awards show by NBC when U2 lead singer Bono uttered the phrase “f—— brilliant.” The FCC said the “f-word” in any context “inherently has a sexual connotation” and can trigger enforcement.” That case has yet to be resolved.

Recently the U.S Supreme Court has entered a legal fight over curse words aired by Fox in 2002 and 2003 on the live broadcasts of “The Billboard Music Awards.” Cher used the phrase, “F— ‘em.” And Nicole Richie said, “Have you ever tried to get cow s— out of a Prada purse? It’s not so f—— simple.”

Scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court this fall, the case would decide whether the government can ban “fleeting expletives,” one-time uses of familiar but profane words.

Dropping an “f-bomb” on a broadcast won’t automatically blast open the floodgates, said Tim Winter, president of Parents Television Council, but he warned, “It’s a slow accumulation. First it’s once every several months. Then it becomes once a month. Then it becomes once a night.”

“That’s our concern for some of the words that are at issue here,” said Winter, who’s also an avowed George Carlin fan: “It’s unfortunate that a brilliant comedian like George Carlin is a poster child for the lawsuits that are out there.”

Edgy comic George Carlin dies in L.A.

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs, dirty words and the demise of humanity, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material developed over 50 years, the bald, bearded Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called “Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television.” A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin’s routine were indecent, and that the government’s broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.

The Grammy-winning Carlin remained an active presence on the comedy circuit. Carlin was scheduled to receive the John F. Kennedy Center’s prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in November and his publicist said Carlin performed in Las Vegas this month.

His comedic sensibility revolved around a central theme: humanity is a cursed, doomed species.

“I don’t have any beliefs or allegiances. I don’t believe in this country, I don’t believe in religion, or a god, and I don’t believe in all these man-made institutional ideas,” he told Reuters in a 2001 interview.

Carlin told Playboy in 2005 that he looked forward to an afterlife where he could watch the decline of civilization on a “heavenly CNN.”

“The world is a big theater-in-the round as far as I’m concerned, and I’d love to watch it spin itself into oblivion,” he said. “Tune in and watch the human adventure.”

AWARDS

Carlin wrote three best-selling books, won four Grammy Awards, recorded 22 comedy albums, headlined 14 HBO television specials, and hosted hundreds of variety shows. One was the first episode of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975, when he was high on cocaine.

Drug addiction plagued him for much of his life, beginning with marijuana experimentation as a teen, graduating to cocaine in the 1970s, and then to prescription painkillers and wine. During the cocaine years, Carlin ignored his finances and ended up owing about $3 million in back taxes. In 2004, he entered a Los Angeles rehab clinic for his alcohol and Vicodin abuse.

George Dennis Carlin was born on May 12, 1937, in New York City, where he was raised with an older brother by their single mother. He fondly recalled that the nuns at his school tolerated his early comedic inclinations.

After a brief, troubled stint in the U.S. Air Force, he started honing his comic act, developing such characters as Al Sleet, a “hippie-dippie weatherman.”

Carlin told Playboy that his sensibilities developed in the 1950s, “when comedy stopped being safe … (and) became about saying no to authority.” He cited such influences as Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Dick Gregory and Bob Newhart.

He also dabbled in movies and television, recently voicing a hippie Volkswagen bus named Fillmore in the Pixar cartoon “Cars.”

Carlin is survived by his second wife Sally Wade; daughter Kelly Carlin McCall; and brother Patrick. His first wife, Brenda, died of cancer in 1997. News of his death was first reported by the television show “Entertainment Tonight.”

Woman Sues Victoria’s Secret Over Thong ‘Malfunction’

A Los Angeles woman is suing the lingerie-producing giant Victoria’s Secret over a thong gone wrong.

Fifty-two-year-old Macrida Patterson, who works in parking enforcement for the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, says she suffered a scratched cornea after either a pendant or a metal fastener snapped off a pair of panties and struck her in the eye.

“It does seem sort of unbelievable at first,” said Patterson’s attorney, Jason Buccat. But, he said, his client’s injuries will “affect her for the rest of her life.”

Tammy Roberts Myers, a Victoria’s Secret spokeswoman, said the company had not seen the lawsuit and had no comment.

The thong, a Victoria’s Secret Sexy Little Thing low-rise v-string, had a heart-shaped pendant attached to the fabric with a metal fastener, according to the lawsuit. When Patterson was changing after work, the metal piece snapped, creating a “slingshot effect,” and either the pendant or the metal piece “cut her eye,” Buccat said.

After the incident, Patterson drove home but “barely made it” because of her eye injury, Buccat said. He added that Patterson, who referred calls for comment to her lawyer, suffered a scratched cornea and had to miss two weeks of work.

Buccat would not release the name of Patterson’s ophthalmologist, saying the trial is still in discovery. New York ophthalmologist Dr. Thomas Kuhns, who did not treat Patterson, said it is hard to comment without seeing the injury, but “a cornea abrasion usually clears up in a day or two.”

Patterson is seeking compensation for lost wages, but Buccat claims the case is not about money.

The case “holds retailers accountable for products they sell,” he said.

Perhaps at 52 years old you might want to just go ahead and embrace the Granny Panties!

Megan Fox reveals ‘Transformers 2′ script re-writes, make-out scenes

Source: www.celebritymound.com

When Michael Bay got behind the camera for his most recent film, he chronicled a lot more than just automobiles transforming into robots from outer space. Millions of fans also watched then 21-year-old Megan Fox transform from an obscure actress best remembered for a Lindsay Lohan movie into one of the most desired hotties on the planet.

Now, the “Transformers” star is back on the set with Michael Bay – and true to the director’s favorite word, she says he’s making an awesome sequel.

“As big as the first movie was, this is 10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions, and acrobatic stunts,” she told us about “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. “Shia and I make out a little bit; I don’t know if anyone wants to see that.”

Something tells us that Shia LeBeouf wants to see it.

Regardless, Megan insisted that the blossoming romance between Sam and Mikaela is only one of the many plotlines Bay will be juggling for the June 2009 flick. But according to the actress, some last-minute scrambling has been taking place to make sure their romance can hold its own among all those Autobot vs. Decepticon showdowns.

“You know, we’ve been having script meetings, and we’ve been reworking the script, because they wrote it fast because of the writer’s strike,” she explained. “And, we’ve just been going through and trying to do some character stuff for Shia and myself in the middle of this crazy world that they’re in.”

“I can tell you that we’re on locations in some really exotic places,” she added. “It’s just going to be a badass movie. It’s just going to be a popcorn-visual-spectacle, summer film.”

As for Michael Bay’s main directorial input to his lead actress, Megan had this to say: “His main note to me is just to look hot; so I try my best.”

If you could only choose one, would you rather have the power to transform into a giant robot, or get Megan Fox to make out with you?

Rapper Young Jeezy charged with DUI in Atlanta

Rapper Young Jeezy was charged with driving under the influence and speeding after he was pulled over on an Atlanta highway early Wednesday.

The multi-platinum-selling artist, whose real name is Jay Jenkins, was driving a Corvette when he was stopped about 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 85, police department spokesman Officer James Polite said.

The arresting officer noticed the vehicle did not have a license plate, but Polite could not say how fast Jenkins was driving.

Jenkins was charged with speeding, driving with no proof of insurance or license plate, having an open container, reckless driving and driving impaired by alcohol or drugs.

He was released from the Atlanta City Detention Center a few hours later on a $4,100 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court July 17.

His attorney, Scott E. Leemon, said in a news release that Jenkins was arrested after leaving a recording studio, where he was working on his new album.

“A court date has been scheduled and Jeezy looks forward to getting the matter resolved,” Leemon said. Jenkins is due in court on July 17.

Jenkins’ collaboration, “Love in This Club,” with R&B star Usher is currently sixth on Billboard’s Hot 100 list.

Javon Walker: I Was Victim of Shotgun Offense

Source: www.celebritymound.com

Just moments after getting out of oral surgery to fix his broken face, NFL star Javon Walker blew the lid off his mysterious beatdown — claiming he was abducted out of his Las Vegas hotel room by gun-toting thugs early Monday morning.

In an exclusive statement to TheDirty.com Walker said, “I was just back at my room and at about 5:30 in the morning, I got a knock at the door, I opened it and 3 guys with guns were there, they cracked me in the head a few times knocking me unconscious. They then robbed me of everything I had — my watch, money — everything! Somehow they got me to the car and dropped me off in the street. That’s what happened.”

Walker, who just signed a $55 million dollar contract with the Oakland Raiders, also says reports that the robbery stems from the champagne wars with Floyd Mayweather at Tryst nightclub earlier in the evening are completely false.
